in anticipation of the arrival of British forces, people began leaving NYC in
such numbers that the Provincial Congress took measures to create an orderly
exodus and to provide for the maintance of the poor. It is clear, however,
that not all the personas named on the list were poor as one man, for
example, went out with his family and three loads of goods. Others,
apparently, were the wives and children of soldiers.the list is devided into
