I found a Giles Carter in the Dubose Genealogy and also from another
source. Giles Carter was a son of Charles Powell Carter. This is so close
to Charles Povall Carter that it REQUIRES furthur study. Furthur reading of
the records reveal that Charles Powell or Charles Povall Carter was not in
the SC records. What was found in the 1790 census was these two Charles
Carters one in the Cheraw District and one in the Edgefield Dist.
A land grant for Charles Carter on Lynches Creek for 100 acres
in 1769 was
found. He sold beef to the Army. No other records were found for him
Charles Powell Carter->Giles Carter>James John Carter, 1808 to 1852.
Theodore Carter, 1845-1918. Claudis Q. Carter, 11 Oct 1871-25 Aug 1952 and
so on.
>Charles Carter was an infant in the Parish of Henrico in
1749. In the
processing of land the line between James Cocke and John Poval not done,
Cocke not attending
The line between Charles Carter and Peter Burton not done Carter being
an
infant.
John Povall's line and Chas. Floyd not done by the same reason.
John Povall's line between him and Robert Poval not done, Robert being an
infant.
>This is from the Vestry Book of Henrico Parish, by Dr. R.A. Brock.
>Charles could be another Carter family but the fact he is
here among the
Povalls suggest otherwise. To be an infant in 1748 means he was under the
age of 21.
Elizabeth Povall daughter of Robert Povall and Judith was born in
December
of 1729.
Robert Povall their son was born 3 of July 1731. He married Winifred
Jones
Miller in Goochland County. He apparently died in 1767.
>Robert and John Povall were the sons of Robert Povall whose
will was filed
in 1728. He left land to be equally divided between them. He left Sarah
Roach a negro girl and to Mary Carter, wife of Giles, a negro girl and to
Giles Carter 10 barrels of corn. The son Robert died about 1732. He left
the two children Robert and Elizabeth Povall. Robert, the infant in 1748,
was old enough to sell land to Theodorick Carter in Charles City County in
1761. This Theodorick was probably the son of Giles Carter II. Giles II,
sold his son Theodorick land in Charles City County, 1741. Associated with
this Theodorick was a Joseph Carter in witnessing a deed in Charles City
County in 1756. Charles Carter was adjacent some land sold in Charles City
County by John Christian to Benjamin Carter, land that was partly in Henrico
and partly in Charles City County. This was recorded 1 March 1769. This is
from some fragments of Charles City County records by Benjamin B. Weisiger III.
>I think all of this is accurate. Anyway Giles Carter who
married first,
Magdalen Dubose, in 1785 in South Carolina is a real possibility for a
breakthrough. I will put some of this on the Carter roots and see if we get
any response.
