I am descended from Samuel. My records show a discrepancy in Rev. Carter's
wife's name. A genealogy prepared professionally for my great aunt's DAR
application in 1940 says that, according to the town records of Woburn, MA,
Thomas Carter married Mary, daughter of Philemon and Dorothy Dalton, of
Dedham, MA. Mary died March 28, 1687. The genealogist notes, "We find one
variation in this statement, i.e., in The Colonial Clergy and the Colonial
Churches of New England by Frederick Lewis Weis (Lancaster, Mass, 193?), p.
50, under the account of their son Samuel the name of the mother is given as
Mary Parkhurst. In every other respect Mr. Weis's account agrees with that
found in the History of Woburn, Town Records, the Carter genealogy, et
cetera."
Has anyone else resolved this question?

Diana,
Being descended from the "other" Carter's in town at the time (Thomas
Carter, blacksmith's family), I don't keep complete information on the Rev
Thomas. But I do read through and keep some track to avoid confusion
between the families. I believe I remember something about the Rev Thomas's
Mary being previously married and that either Parkhurst or Dalton was her
maiden name and the other was the name of her first husband. It may have
been in the huge book on the descendants of the Rev Thomas written I
believe by Howard Carter.
