Hi Carter List:
I wonder if many of you Carter researchers have considered the possibility
that your Carters may have branches in NS (Nova Scotia???) they are thick on
the ground there. Although my particular flavour seem very elusive.
An early book "Historical and Genealogical Record of Colchester Co."
published in 1873 mentions a William Carter as one of the first settlers in
Brookfield NS in abt. 1786, allegedly from New Hampshire.
In another book "History of Sackville, NB (New Brunswick). there are several
pages of Carters, stating a Thomas Carter as being the first with this name
in the province, came from Yorkshire England in 1774.
Several of the descendents of these families wandered over the border to the
US in fact one family Carter/Purdy is connected in some way to the Fillmore
who I believe signed the Declaration of Independence.
The folks in NS are very computer literate and I heard to-day that 10 of the
15 counties have genweb sites, access them thru Cyndi's list its easy. The
Cumberland Co. site has several census indexes on line, these can be
downloaded, unzipped and away you go.
Second point of this ramble.... did you know there was a Westmoreland County
in NB as well as VA?, a Kent Co. in England, NB, and Ont?, Colchester in NS
and NC. and I've probably missed quite a few. So why not put in your
subject line Carter, Colchester, NC because you all know every family has 11
Williams!
Thanks
