I know where you can get "tons"! first of all, Gay & Lyndon NIX posted
much of Mrs. Marian CARTER LEDGERWOOD's work on the PA>VA>SC CARTERs--it
should be archived somewhere last August-September. Mrs. CARTER
LEDGERWOOD is a septigenarian who has spent more than 40 years
researching these very CARTERs--all of her info is documented with
wills, deeds, etc. Samuel remained in VA as far as she knows. Thomas
moved to Laurens Co., SC, abt. 1765, was a Tory and abt. 1783 was a Tory
refugee in E. FL. which changed from being British to Spanish with the
Treaty of 1783 (I may be descended from this branch--I believe they may
have moved to Wilkes/Lincoln Co., GA, abt. 1790's). Benjamin and John
moved to Laurens Co., SC, after the Rev. War--1780's. Benjamin & wf.
Mary moved to Wilkes Co., GA abt. 1795 and are found in records of
Wilkes & Lincoln Co., GA.--I may have descended from this line!! This
John, son of Benj., was not married to Rachel CHAMBERS-that John was
his cousin. John's (son of Benjamin) wife's name was unknown. These 2
cousins lived next door in Laurens Co., SC--son of Benjamin was called
John "Salt Spring" CARTER because he lived on the Salt Spring Run of
Cane Creek. The cousin was called John CARTER Jr. and he was married to
Rachel CHAMBERS. John "Salt Spring" CARTER was the only son of Benjamin
of Frederick Co, VA, to remain in Laurens Co., SC--he died there and his
will is recorded there-naming children: Joel, Benjamin, Eliz., Mary,
Margaret, & Ruth.
Which of the boys are you descended from? I don't know how to access
the archives.
Thank you,
Cynthia CARTER DYER
