To the List, responding to Myron's response,
Yes, the Charles CARTER & Lucy MORGAN family of southwestern VA is the
subject of my current research. I'm particularly interested in the
Indian attacks experienced by the household of their oldest son, John
CARTER, b. 1841 (accounts vary as to total count of children killed in
the massacre of their household, said to have taken place in 1785 or
1787). Another son of Charles CARTER and Lucy MORGAN, Charles CARTER
Jr., as I mentioned in my earlier e-mail, had a son named Stanton
CARTER, born abt. 1782. Stanton's death has been noted as possibly
due to Indian attack. Charles CARTER Jr also had a son named Henry
CARTER, known to have been related -- but exactly how, a mystery -- to
Enoch Jeremiah CARTER, b. 1767, who started my Jackson County, TN
branch of Carter's.
Myron, after thinking about the info you sent me from Dr. Miller's
book, "Descendants of Capt Thomas", it looks like Dr. Miller's time
had as tough job with record for persons of same or similar name, just
as we do today.
My sources, which include transcripts of family tree narratives
accessible at the FHC in Salt Lake City, clearly indicate that Charles
CARTER Jr had three wives. The first two were sisters, Mary and
Millie STANTON (not one wife, Mary Millie STANTON). Charles is said
to have divorced Mary, who subsequently moved to Kentucky. Charles
Carter, Jr., at the time of his death in 1829 or 1830 in TN, is said
to have been married to Rebecca FRYER PEARSON.
Myron, after thinking about the records you sent for Charles CARTER
Jr, it seems that Dr Miller's book confused two cousins, who were both
named Charles.
The different men named Charles descend as follows:
#1:
Capt Thomas CARTER married Arabella WILLIAMSON>
Charles CARTER Sr. b. betw. 1707-1716 married Lucy MORGAN>
Charles CARTER Jr. b betw. 1754-1760 married 1) Mary Stanton, 2)
Millie Stanton, 3) and Rebecca FRYER PEARSON
#2:
Capt Thomas CARTER married Arabella WILLIAMSON>
Peter CARTER b. 1706 VA married Judith NORRIS>
Thomas CARTER b. 1731 VA married Mary MORGAN>
Charles CARTER b. bef. 1775
The LDS sources state that Charles CARTER Jr was the Charles who was
Deputy Sheriff of Russell County, VA, in 1786, and migrated to
Granville, Jackson County, TN, around 1803-1805, and died there in
1830.
Charles CARTER son of Thomas seems to be the Charles who was first
clerk of Lee County, VA, 1792-1824 and the one who was buried in Rye
Cove in what is now Scott County, VA, in 1828.
Does Miller's book indicate any info for Thomas CARTER and Mary
MORGAN, which might support of refute these views?
