I can't help you with (Irish) but I am very interested in your line. Jirah
is such an unusual name. I have CARTER ancestors in IA and all of the
evidence I have found to date points back to Jirah CARTER and Desire BATES
in CT and then back to Rev. Thomas CARTER in 1642 in Woburn. I would very
much like to hear more from you on your line. Thank you. Nancy CARTER >>
HI Nancy,
I'm afraid I don't have much information to offer you, as I have only
recently discovered my gt.-gt. grandfather, Jirah (Irish) CARTER. He was
married to Sarah Ann (do not know her maiden name), b. Jan. 9, 1809, died
Aug. 20, 1878 in Sergeant Bluff, Iowa. Sarah Ann is buried in the same plot
with her son, William W. CARTER, b. Jan. 26, 1840, died Feb. 26, 1903, and
William's wife, Hattie May (nee SMITH), b. Nov. 24, 1850, died Nov. 26, 1901.
These three are found together in Holman Cemetary in Woodbury County. Jirah
is not buried with them. I have yet to find out where he is.
I do have data from an IA census that states William's father, Jirah, was
born in New York. I'm sorry I do not have more info for you. Do any of
these people or locations coincide with yours? Where in IA are your CARTERs
located?
Thank you for writing. Again, I wish I could be more helpful.....
