this is what I found on my Joel A. Carter....it may not match up with yours if
you have Joel and Mary on the 1850 census.
All the following needs to be checked further as Joel A. is a question mark in
my lineage.
1850 Washington Co. IL census
Joel A Carter TN 1820
Mary TN 1824
children:
Francis M. IL 1840
Sarah E. IL 1847
James M . IL 1849
as you see your Martha J. would not have been born yet as you state her bd as
1859 which this mother would be 35 and still able to have a child.
There are many Marthas in this family.
Let me give you a short probable history for this family. I am researching a
Richard P. Carter who with his wife Nancy L. Phillips Carter died 1849 of
brain fever...etc. in Richview, IL (Washington Co. IL) leaving my great
grandmother Sarah M. 5 and her brother John L. 2 to be raised with her
grandfather John C. Phillips. Beaucoup, IL (Washington Co. IL)
My best guess (as this is speculation):
I think Richard P. is brother to Livesay, Martha, Robert and perhaps Joel
A.Carter
Livesay b. 1798 VA, Martha b. 1810 Tn., Robert b. 1813 TN Joel b. 1820 TN,
Richard b. 1821 IL.
They may be children of Richard P. Carter who married Sarah Winrow . Richard
P. Carter d. 1837 Morgan Co. IL.
This Richard P. Carter may be son of Rev. Robert Carter b. Va 1761 d. IL
Clinton 1819 and Alice b. 1759 d. 1821 Clinton Co.
And Robert may have been son of John and Abigail Carter.
This is through research in the early history books of both Clinton and
Washington Co. IL.
Some may be brothers instead of fathers.....dates and times and digging
through local history my sources. In Washington Co. IL history for example
it talks about older settlers protecting newcomers Joel A and Richard Carter.
There also seemed to be a lot of movement between Clinton, Morgan and
Washington Co. IL.
These people were early Methodists.
I don't know if Joel A is on Washington CO. IL 1860 census. Hope some clues
are in here and we match up....
