Thought someone might be looking for these Carters. I haven't had time to
dig into Jack's background - but I have found a Josiah Carter in Harrison
County, (W)V, in the 1870s - also another who d before 1850. My g.
grandmother was Susan Carter Sullivan of the same place. She died in the
1930s. I don't know the connection between Susan and Jack, if any.

I attended the funerial services for Jack Carter, former Rector of my
church here in Maryland, this past Saturday. The following memorial was
published in our church newsletter. Jack was a great human and good
friend, but I hadn't realized his WVa connections. He was very proud of
his "Virginia Carters" ancestry.
John Paul Carter
May 14, 1923 - August 28, 1997
The Rev. Dr. John Paul Carter, known as "Jack" to his parishoners at St.
John's and friends throughout the world, died on August 28, 1997 in
Sewanee, Tennessee following a brief illness. He served St. John's as
Associate Rector from 1980-1985 and as Rector from 1986-1987. Memorial
services were held at All Saints' Chapel in Sewanee, and will be held at
St. John's on Saturday, Sept.13 at 2 p.m.
Following Jack's retirement in 1987, he moved with his wife Joan to
Sewanee where they enjoyed activities on the campus of the University of
the South. Jack kept up a lively correspondence with friends not only
from St. John's but with many he had met through his varied and lifelong
interests and travels.
Jack was born and raised in Clarksburg, West Virginia, the son of Rev
Josiah T. Carter and Virginia Rutherford Nolting Carter. He was
graduated from the College of William and Mary, Virginia Theological
Seminary and the University of Virginia.
He served parishes in North Carolina, was Episcopal Chaplain at the
University of Texas, was Executive Secretary of College Work of the
Third Province of the Episcopal Church, and Executive Secretary of the
National Association of Episcopal Schools. He also led oveseas projects
in Mexico, Japan, Tanzania and Haiti.
He is survived by his wife Joan, of Sewanee; six children: Stephen D.
Carter of College Corner, Ohio; Andrew N. Carter of San Luis Obispo,
Cal.; Thomas L. Carter of Cary, North Carolina; Chris Carter-Husk of
Belmont, Mass.; Janet Carter-Posner of Charlottsville, Va.; and Virginia
Carter of Baltimore; and eight grandchildren.
He is also survived by two brothers and two sisters: James E. Carter,
Josiah T. Carter, Jr., Louise Carter Blount and Virginia Carter Zinn.
