Age 79 of the Seattle area went home to be with the Lord August 19, 2002. He
was born in Eldon, Iowa July 29, 1923 to Glen R. and Edith Carter. After
being raised in Eldon, he joined the Navy on September 9, 1941, with a
willingness to lay down his life, he served for the duration of WW II until
honorably discharged on December 8, 1945.
after graduation from the University of Iowa, Glen started a career in
newspaper journalism in Rockford, Illinois. Fond memories of a visit to the
Pacific Northwest during the Navy and a love for the sea and boating brought
Glen and family to Seattle. Acceptance of a position at the Seattle Times
opened the door to a successful career of writing and the opportunity to
pursue his passion for sailing. Through his love for both sailing and writing
Glen became well known and well liked, received several awards for his
writing, wrote and published a book, "My Waterfront", completed a manuscript
for a second book and retired from a satisfying career as Editor of Maritime,
at the Seattle Times.
He enjoyed his retirement years building and living aboard his 38 foot
sailboat, "The Carousel". Glen died peacefullly and comfrortably of cancer
and will be missed by many.
Glen is survived by his lady Jean Pierce of Auburn, WA.; his sister Mary
McCaw of Boca Raton, FL.; his three sons, Dave Carter of Ephrata, WA.; Don
Carter of Redmond, WA.; Dan and wife Tani Carter of Ephrata, WA., and two
grandsons Daniel and Benjamin Carter. Interment will be held at Ephrata
Cemetery in Ephrata, WA. (I am not related) - Jim Chandler
