Kathy- the Carter's were very affluent and held many properties and I am wondering if
you have checked the surrounding counties for their willbooks etc. Since Spots was formed
from Kg Wm and Essex and King and Queen Co there might be some extant things in those
counties you may have missed alathough since the county was formed in 1720 you may want to
go the other direction; for example Nottaway was formed from Amelia and Spots counties I
think about 1788. While i was traipsing all over the internet and Virginia for Goochland
records they were actually in present day Nelson county and Amherst as these counties were
originally formed from Goochland. Just a thought... I will watch your search carefully as
I am still trying to find the parents of my Frances Carter who may have married in
Spotsylvania Co
to a Daniel Tiller just aorund the time frame you are seeking.

CARTER, Joseph d Spotsylvania Can I ask that we all please post
to the list, so we can all converse on this subject. I would like to get it settled if
it is possible. Maybe somone has some proof that others of us don't have.
I have had a couple of Carter researchers tell me about the confusion with two
Joseph's who had wives named Catherine, and who both died in 1751 in Spotsylvania Co.
But, I can only find a Will for one Joseph in Spots Co, in 1750/1751. Are we sure
wer're not mixing up the same Joseph? I do realize a couple of you have a couple
of different children listed for your Joseph, but most of the names of the children are
the same for the two Josephs. I have the Will of Joseph who wrote his Will Feb. 19,
1750, probated in 1751 and names wife Catherine, and children: Joseph, John, George,
Robert, Mary, Elizabeth and Caty. Executor was John Minor. Does anyone have a
different Joseph who died in 1751? Can you give me the date his Will was written or
probated so I can get a copy?
I have access to a copy also of Joseph Lyon Miller's book. But, I have had
several people quote to me what is in the book, but no explanation of where the proof is,
besides the book itself. I don't want to sound to 'Picky' here, but I
would like to be sure of the parentage.
I have checked out the internet, Deeds, census, tax records and many other
documents. That is why I have come to the list begging to get this figured out. All
it takes is for one person to stumble across a document that no one else has found yet.
So, if there is another Joseph in Spots Co., please post what you have so we can
view it. This might settle some of the disagreements.
Thanks so much, Kathy Wells.

Subject: CARTER, Joseph d Spotsylvania
Hi, Kathy hope this will give some clarity on Joseph CARTER d 1751, Spotsylvania Co,
VA.
CARTER, Joseph s/o Capt Thomas CARTER, Sr and Katherine DALE married Ann PINES
CARTER, Joseph s/o Thomas CARTER, Jr and Arabella WILLIAMSON was b 1696/97 at
"Barford" Lancaster Co, VA married Catherine STEVENS in 1719. Joseph was
Tobacco Inspector at Port of Corotoman 1724-1738. In 1738 he moved to Spotsylvania where
he died in April 1751. (Will dated 19 Feb 1750 Probated 7 May 1751)
CARTER, Joseph who married Catherine AMMON was born 1704, Christ Church Parish,
Middlesex Co, VA, supposedly to William CARTER and Mary GOODLOE.
He married Catherine, 1 Dec 1731, Christ Church Parish, Middlesex Co, VA.
The confusion seems to arise from the fact both Joseph's married women with the
first names Catherine and both Joseph's supposedly died in 1751, St George's
Parish, Spotsylvania, Co VA.
