MELINDA,
You may have already tried this, but the way I found the father of my
husbands John Carter in Virginia, was on the tax records. Because they
have the tax records for almost every year between 1780-1850s, I started in
the county I knew John was in, about 1823, and traced him back every year
till I found his father which was about 1783. Fortunately for me, they
actually listed Bailey Carter and John Carter in the same household, and one
tithe was over 21 yrs old, the other tithe between 16 and 21. I knew
Bailey was about 45, and John would be about 17. I found both of their
names listed in the same household for two years straight, and then the next
year Bailey was by himself and John was by himself. Bailey was minus one
horse, and John had one, and they were listed right below each other for
many years after that. This is my only real proof I have that they are
father and son. It is really obvious if you follow the tax records
through till Bailey died in 1811. They are both on several deeds also
during that period of time, but none of the deeds say father/son
relationship. But at this point I am certain they were. If you have
not tried the tax records, you might check them out. They can be very
helpful.
Also, you might try the website below. I found it helpful for
other names I was working on. It takes you to other peoples webpages.
Now, I never use this as proof, but I like to see what other people's
opinions are, and many times it will give me a lead as to possiblities of
names to work on. I never turn down the chance to check out a lead.
Some of them show their sources, but if they don't their E-mail address is
at the top where you can contact them and ask where they got their
information. Hope this helps,

Good Luck, Kathy Wells
