Hi,
I am at a brick wall with my G-Grandmother, Sarah M. Carter. I'm hoping to find
information on any of her siblings or parents. Sarah was born May 1, 1842 in IL and died
March 24, 1908 in Jefferson County, IL. The first mention of Sarah being in Jefferson
County is when she married my G-Grandfather, Augustus Milton Oard on October 23, 1862. I
have not been able to find Sarah in any census records prior to 1870 when she was in
Jefferson County, IL. Her father's birth location varies from TN to IL in the 1880
& 1900 census records. There were only a few Carter families in Jefferson County in
the 1860 census and they seem like they were all related and all were from TN and IL:
Sarah Carter, age 40, b.TN
Dillard Carter
Evalena Carter
Evalane Carter
Joel Anthony Carter, age 46, b. TN
Mary Carter
Sarah E. Carter
James M. Carter
Nancy Carter
John Carter
William Carter
Martha Carter
James B. Carter, age 36, B. TN
Elizabeth carter
Lucy A. carter
James K. Carter
Christina Carter
Elvira Carter
Douglas D. Carter
There was also a William E. Carter age 14, b.IL living with another of my relatives,
Jonathan Wells and Mary J. Carter, age 10, b. IL living with Samuel Hunter.
I'm wondering if my Sarah could also somehow be related to the Carter families listed
above. Is anyone on this list related to these Carters?
Thanks,
Michelle
Michelle:
If you have access to a site with censuses (such as Ancestry) have you tried searching
for Sarah by her first name and approximate birth year.
I did this for a gr gr grandmother who "disappeared" between the 1850 census
and the time she married my gr gr grandfather in 1864.
I finally found her living with her mother and sister in the same county. It seems her
mother had remarried in 1858 and the 1860 census taker had listed the mother's two
daughters with the same last name as the step-father. He probably assumed they were the
husband's daughters.
This has worked for me more than once.
Good luck hunting,
Peggy
