In reporting the issue of Landon and Judith [Fauntleroy] Carter of
Pittsylvania: “Some Colonial Mansions: And Those who Lived in Them :
with Genealogies of the Various Families...” By Thomas Allen Glenn, p.
294, says (2) Charles Beale, m. Ann Stuart, and had: Catherine, Judith,
m. Edwin Carter: Hebe, m. William Ashby; Marion, m. Capt. William
Rhodes; Ellen, m. W. Brenton Boggs; Charles, Duncan R. (I can’t quite
make out the middle initial on the page for Duncan. It looks like R but
should be S.)
From other sources, a couple of corrections and additions to this list
would seem to be needed.
First, one correction. Marion Stuart Carter m. Lt. Hillary H. Rhodes
(not Capt. William) on 21 May 1834 in Washington, D.C. (This is
supported both by Washington marriage lists and by her death notice.)
Hillary and Marion had at least four children who become important in
following the Charles Beale Carter children. The Rhodes children were
Mary Rhodes, Nancy “Nannie” Stewart Rhodes, Catherine Rhodes and William
Rhodes. Marion died in 1844 and Duncan Carter became the children’s
legal guardian as their father completed his military career.
Sometime prior to 1850, probably about 1845 based on his obituary,
Duncan moved to St. Louis becoming first a clerk and later a pilot and
captain on several riverboats in that area. In the 1850 census he is
listed twice. Once as a clerk aboard a riverboat based in St. Louis and
2nd at his home address where he is living with John F. Carter and his
wife (whose first name I have yet to decipher) and their children Ann
and Theresa; also, Stewart Carter; Judith A. Carter; Mary, Nancy,
Catherine and William Rhodes; and Edwin Carter.
Of course, no relationships are given on that census, but in his later
will and probate, Judith is described as his sister for whom he has
purchased a grave alongside John F’s. In other documents, John’s middle
name is given as Fauntleroy giving rise to the strong suggestion that he
too has a relationship to Charles Landon Carter and Judith Fauntleroy
and that at least one child has been left out of the lists of Charles
Beale Carter’s children.
The question remains exactly who is Stewart Carter, who from later
dealings would also appear to be a sibling of the other Carters. In the
census Judith is described as 40-years-old while Edwin is described as
37, so I believe the Edwin on the list is the Edwin Carter that Judith
married.
There is one other player with the Carters in St. Louis and that is Maj.
A.D. (Adam Duncan) Steuart/Stuart/Stewart, the Virginia-born Army
paymaster at the Jefferson barracks for many years. Stewart (the name he
was using when he died) became a quite wealthy man and made provisions
for some of the Carter relatives, including the Rhodes children, in his
estate. I believe he must also be a relative (possibly a brother) of the
Ann Stuart who married Charles Beale Carter but have been unable to
place him. Does anyone have any ideas as to where he fits in or who are
Ann Stuart's parents.
