Dear Barbara,
I don't have his date of birth on any document, though my mother's birth
cert in 1925 lists him as 53--and he's 54 on my uncle's cert, 4 years later
in 1929. So yes, he was in his 50's when both children were born. (And he
had been married before, and had at least one son. I have no idea what her
name was, or what happened to her, but there was bad blood between the two
families. His brother only notified my grandmother of his death several
days after the event, and after she telegrammed him in NY? to find out why
he hadn't shown up for Christmas in Florida as arranged.)
Yes, he's listed as Bentley Frederick Carter on both birth certs and the
marriage license (1919), but he apparently went by B.F. Carter.
More pieces to this pesky puzzle. Thanks for all your help and suggestions.
Katherine

Hi Katherine,
I don't have a Bentley F Carter in our family.
Was Bentley Frederick the exact name listed on the children's birth
certificates. Bentley could have been his legal name and he went by
another
name. This is crazy. I have looked for him every way I can think of.
I looked thru some old queries of yours to get further information on him.
Did his marriage license show his age when he married your grandmother;
where did you find his date of birth. Was he in his 50's or 60's when the
children were born?
Do you happen to know the first wife's name.

Any chance there's a Bentley Frederick Carter as a son or grandson of your
James Carter or of one of his brothers or nephews or cousins? I'm looking
for one born around 1870-ish somewhere in Georgia: my brick wall.
Thanks!
Katherine Kurtz-MacMillan,
grand-daughter of Bentley Frederick Carter of Georgia
