Thanks, Elaine.
I have a copy of the marriage license, but it only lists the names. Bentley
Frederick Carter married Alma Irene Mulligan on December 3, 1919 in Atlanta,
GA. On my mother's birth certificate (Margaret Frances Carter), in 1925, he
is listed as being 53, and was only 54 in 1929, when her brother was born.
(This was a second marriage, and he was sensitive about the age
difference--but it makes him born before 1872, family tradition says in
Jesup, GA.) Don't know what happened to the first wife, but we believe he
had at least one son by that marriage. He died in December of 1931, but we
don't know exactly when or where or of what, or where he was buried. He had
at least one brother with whom he was in business, name unknown--allegedly
in stock brokerage, in NY and Atlanta.
And that's pretty much the sum of what I know about my own grandfather. Any
assistance greatly appreciated.

Have you tried the 1880 Census on FamilySearch.org? I know,
sometimes
people who should be there don't show up in a search (don't forget to try
misspellings, initials, and middle names -- do you know any siblings'
names?). Do you have access to the 1870 Census, in case he was born in
time
to be listed? If he wasn't married in 1900 he might have been with his
parents, and if he was married they could have been in the same area.
Have you seen his marriage license? I suppose he died too soon to be
listed
in the Social Security Death Index.
Good luck.

for one born around 1870-ish somewhere in Georgia: my brick wall.
Thanks!
