Hello List!
I have an Enos B Carter b:1819 TN, married 1837 Wilson Co TN to Celia
Ozment, b:1819 NC. A Solomon Carter stood Surety for their marriage. I do
not find this particular Enos Carter, or Enos Carter & Celia, in census
records of TN or KY until 1860 in Graves Co KY, and later in 1870 in Ballard
Co KY, where they both died and are buried.
Because I have no 1840 or 1850 census data, I show no children until those
still living at home in 1860: Alexander Pitts Carter and his twin brother
Richard P Carter, b:1844 TN, and younger brother John David Carter b: 1853
TN. Their older sister Rebecca Ann Carter b:1840 TN m: Joseph Turner, is
living next door in Graves Co KY in 1860.
I am a descendant of AP, a Union veteran from TN, who appears on the 1870
Ballard Co KY census with wife Jane and two sons. He rafted his family
across the Mississippi in 1883, and settled in Scott Co MO. Wife Jane died
after having eight children, AP remarried and had three more children with
second wife Carrie. His twin brother Richard P also served the Union from
TN, and was killed in 1864. He is buried in the Memphis National Cemetery.
Daughter Rebecca Ann married second Silas Jett, and her descendants still
live in Carlisle Co KY. I have no record of John David Carter until his
death in 1923 in Carlisle Co KY. The informant on John's death certificate
is WB Carter of Paragould AR, who gives John's parents' names as Enis Batis
Carter and Sallie Ozment. I have not been able to trace this WB Carter, who
might be a son, and have found no record of marriage for John David.
Enos gives his name variously as E.B., Enos B, Enos, and E. Bently Carter. I
am pursuing the theory that this Enos Bently Carter may be a son of
Alexander Carter (NC) & Rhoda Benthall (NC) m:1803 in Sumner Co TN, but have
not found anyone connected to that family or a list of their children. The
1850 Rutherford Co census lists Alexander Carter age 53 & Rhoda age 52, both
NC. The Sumner Co TN marriage records list this marriage as 1809, which
would be cutting it mighty close for the Rutherford County couple, and it
gets worse-- I have a correction from a Carter researcher who has seen the
original marriage record, and says it is actually "1803." Therefore, the
Rutherford census data must apply to another coincidentally named Alexander
& Rhoda. If anyone can claim them, please do and let me know.
At present, I am working with these clues: Rhoda had a brother Enos Benthall
who fought in the War of 1812, and died 1816. The name "Enos" was also used
by Rhoda's Aunt, Rhoda Benthall Vinson (d:1856 Sumner Co TN) to name her son
Enos Vinson. The "Bently" Enos uses, could possibly be a corruption or
misspelling of "Benthall." And of course there is the Wilson Co / Sumner Co
proximity.
Enos Carter's wife, Celia Ozment, may be a daughter of Richard Ozment and
Rebecca Pavey m: 1816 Guilford Co NC. No record of their children exists
with any Ozment researchers I have contacted, though all other lines are
well documented.
Enos was born at a time during which the census records didn't list all
family members-- he would have been age 1 in someone's 1820 household. The
first census he might have shown up in as an independent would be 1840, with
Celia, and I do not find him listed in TN. He is not listed in the 1850 TN
census. I am certain he is not the Enos Carter listed in the Russell and
Casey Co KY census for 1840 & 50. I am posting this Enos B Carter & Celia
Ozment line in hopes someone recognizes any of the people I have mentioned.
