Research indicates my Carters were from North Carolina.
Census records give South Carolina, but in the early days no one knew where
the SC/NC line was located. An uncle, now deceased, still referred to
both SC and NC as "Carolina".
There is a Carter Gedcom being circulated containing many mistakes.
It appears someone accumulated Carter names and connected them with
apparently no thought or care as to who the parents were , with no attempt
made to determine who they were.
Contents of the gedcom is being posted in many places as gospel,
including my own posting until I began research to confirm the contents of
the gedcom and learned it contained errors in the case of my group.
Hardy H. Carter, born 1826 SC (as the census records consistently
state) , is listed on the gedcom as the son of a David Carter who was born
in GA 1789 and who is listed in Butler Co, AL 1850 in the household of a
William Carter also born in GA 1806.
William and David Carter were nowhere near Hardy H. Carter at any
time.
Hardy Carter is enumerated in Dale Co AL 1850 and Coffee County
County Alabama 1860.
Hardy Carter was listed on the 1850 Dale Co, AL census and 1860
Coffee Co, AL census.
Hardy Carter died in the Civil war, therefore, was never listed on
another census. Both censuses state he was born in SC, not GA. His Civil
War record indicates he was born in SC.
To my knowledge, no documentation exists placing Hardy Carter in
Georgia or in Butler Co AL at any time.
David Carter , born 1789 GA, was not, at any time, in the same
place as Hardy Carter .
To my knowledge, there are no David Carters in the Hardy Carter
family.
Next to David Carter of Butler Co AL are John Carter, born 1792 GA,
Alfred Carter, born 1808 GA. Neither were born in SC or NC.
