Hi Lynn or Shiela or CARTER List,
Before, I sent to you only the 7th and 8th and 9th generations as
requested. The following is the first generations of this line and how
they settled in America to hook up to it. My next installments will be
a few generations AFTER THE above 9th generation in smaller units. This
all started when they found Captain Thomas' Prayer Book. Hope it is
not too confusing. The more I read this article the more illuminating
it is.
Good luck Cousins,
Sharon Lengfellner

___history ? inferred that Ancell was our ancestor but when this
"Visitation" was found in the "British Museum" this was
found to be untrue, and the true and rightful ancestor is the older son,
Thomas. Ancell and Jane Miles had five children:
1. George
2. John
3. Ancell, Jr.
4. William
5. Jane
Third: 3. Thomas Carter ( ? 1588 - ? 1651 ), the older son of
William Jr., and Mary ANCELL in Kempson County,
Bedford, England. Thomas m Jane BELLAY, dau of John Bellay, Doctor of
Civil Law and Chancellor to the Diocese of
Lincoln. Thomas and Jane had five children
1. Elizabeth Note: name is also spelled as Bellay but should be with
an "A"
2. Jane
3. Susan
4. William
5. Thomas Jr.
Thomas was living in 1634 when the "Visitation" was signed by him as the
Oldest living member of the CARTER family. It
appears that Thomas came to America with his grandson (Cpt Thomas about
1649/50, landing in Nansemond County,
VA, and died shortly thereafter, being about 1651.
Fouth: 4. William CARTER ( ? 1608 - ? ) the older son of Thomas and
Jane Bellay of Kempson County, Bedford,
England, m Ann Emmery, dau of Thomas EMMERY of Aldridge, Bedford County,
England. Note: Thomas Earsley had
not liked his name so changed it to EMMERY: William and Ann EMMERY had
three children:
1. Thomas
2. Anne
3. William Jr.
Fifth: 5. Captain Thomas CARTER ( ? 1628 - 22 Oct 1700) Born in
Kempson County, Bedford, England came to
America, to Nansemond Co, VA, when the family legend says his
grandfather who came with him died soon after landing.
They were fleeing from Cromwell's wrath, as they were supporters of the
Stuarts. (One descendent writing over 100 years
later said: "Captain Thomas CARTER Planter, was born in England in the
winter of 1630/31. His young wife and two
children were to follow him to American just as soon as he could make
ready for them. Another child was born soon after
his departure, and both his wife and child died. Not long after, it was
learned that the other two children had died also.
From another source, we find that our Captain Thomas emigrated from
England about 1649/50, being about 21 years of
age. So this fits perfectly with the date of birth (1628.29) Captain
Thomas left Nansemond County and appears in
Lancaster County, VA in the year 1653 when he paid tithes of himself and
four servants. He was then a widower and was
probably related to Col. John CARTER of a distinguished VA family, Cpt
Thomas bought his first land from Col. John in
Lancaster County. There he prospered and in 1663 (in just 10 years) he
paid tithes on 20 persons and was an officer in
the county militia. He continued to acquire land and took an active
part in the affairs as juryman, appraiser and as JP of
the County Court. He was Deputy Clerk of the county from 1670 to 1674.
(Someone wrote of that early day "that no office,
provided it did carry a salary was too insignificant to be coveted by
the most conspicuous or even the very wealthiest
citizen.")
Captain Thomas now found himself in need of a companion and married
Katherine DALE, the oldest dau of
Major Edward Dale and Lady Diana SKIPWORTH DALE, This was on 4 May
1670. In 1694, Capt Thomas received by
deed from his father-in-law 500 acres of land, a negro slave, and other
property. Katherine was generously rewarded in
the will as were four of the children. After a long and successful
career as a planter, tobacco trader, and merchant, having
had business connections in England, Ireland and elsewhere, Capt Thomas
made his will on 16 Aug, 1700, and died in
Lancaster Co, VA on 22 Oct., 1700. He left 100 acres of land to each of
4 sons: Edward; Thomas, Jr.; John; and Henry
(who was then in England).
Katherine was to have the home plantation, "Barford", the negro slave
called, Dick, the great table, her share of
the personal estate, and the privilege of cutting fence rails on any of
the son's land. He states that four children, Elizabeth,
Katherine, Peter and Joseph were provided for by their grandfather
(Major Dale). In the event Henry did not return from
England, the 5th son, James, was to receive his portion. All the nine
living children shared in the residuary estate. This
fits perfectly with the other records, for we find that Thomas and
Katherine had 13 children, and four died young (Diana,
William and Nicholas(twins), and Daniel). Capt Thomas wrote a clear
hand and used the Dale Crest on his will, as his was
misplaced at the time. He left a silver drinking pot, a tankard,
spoons, and a parcel of books. Of all the sons, much is
known in the political and social history of VA. (See William and Mary
Quarterly of April, 1909)
Captain Thomas had name his home in England, where he was born. He
was a vestry man in Christ Church.
The building is still in use, even though in sad neglect, and it is
assumed that he is buried in the churchyard. That being
so long ago, there are no markers evident. Not many years ago, part of
the Barford home was still standing.
Captain Thomas CARTER's prayer book has been found, containing the
family record. From Mrs. John
Scarlett SMITH of San Francisco, CA., who step-mother was a CARTER, was
obtained this old CARTER prayers book.
Printed in 1662, the entries were no doubt written by Captain Thomas.
The last two entries, the deaths of Thomas and
Katherine are written in a different hand. Time and space would not
permit showing all that was written in this book, but this
much will be appreciated by any who find the time to read this record,
as follow:
"With this Prayer Book, Rev John Sheppard, on Wednesday 4th of May,
1670, was married Mr Thomas Carter
of Barford, in the County of Lancaster, in VA, and Katherine Dale, the
oldest dau of Mr Edward Dale, the same County."
Then the births: (13 children).
1. Edward (9 April 1671 - ? 1743)
2. Thomas Jr (4 June 1672-?1733)
3. John (8 May 1674 - ?)
4. Henry S. (7 June 1676 - ? 1743)
5. Diana (? 1679 - 1679)

7. Nicholas..../// "
8. Elizabeth ( ? 1691-?)
She was 13 years of age at the time her grandfather included her in his
will.
9. Daniel ( ?1686 - ?) Died young
10. James ( 25 Dec 1684--24 Nov. 1743)
11. Katherine (? 1686 - ?) Provided for in grandfather/s will, she

was 6 years of age.
