Hi Shiela,
I am reviewing the general memos of 99 and found yours. I work at a
genealogy library and they had the story printing of the Thomas
Carters since the 1600s. It copied poorly but I am glad to have it.
Your Wm. Merriman is in it as follows:
SELECTIONS OF THE 7TH GENERATION
8. William Merriman Carter (? 1730-?) 2nd son of John and susan Payne,
b in Lancaster Co, VA, moved to Stafford Co, VA when just a small boy
soon after his mother's death. "Merry" as he was known (as he never
used the name William Merriman met and became a close friend of the man
who was later to be his father-in-law. Merry fought through the French
and Indian war (1753-1763) with Augustine LEFTWICH Sr, and his sons, Wm
and Thomas. Merry m Francis LEFTWICH about 1758 during the war. They
had thirteen children:
1.. William Leftwich 1st. (?-1760-?1779),"for his Country in the
Revolutionary War"
2. Augustine ?1762-?
3. Joel ? 1764-?

13.William Leftwich 2nd ?1779-?
9TH GENERATION
9. James Carter 2nd 1776-1832 7th son of William Merriman and Francis
Fanny Leftwich and so named for the 5th son who died young. Born near
the small village of Liberty, now called Bedford, VA, James and brother
Wm. Merriman, Jr. went to Smith Co, TN at an early age to seek their
wealth. Deciding this climate not to their liking they separated. Wm
Merriman, Jr went to Giles co, TN and became a very successful farmer
near Lynnville, TN.
James went to Davidson Co, TN where he met and married Susan ALLISON
HODGE in 1803. James and Susan's 1st son was born in Davidson Co just
outside of Nashville, but the city has grown so that now it is well
within the city limits. When this 1st son, Wm Leftwich 3rd was 8 years
of age, James and susan moved to Henry Co, TN and built a home where
their other five sons were born. This was a large acreage of land that
James and Susan acquired, for it was divided out to six sons, and then
to their children, and remained in the possession of the Carters until,
one by one, they sold out. (Glyde Ellison Carter being the last to hold
on to the original tract of lant). this land is located 6 miles so of
Paris, TN and 3 Mi no of Henry, TN. James and Susan spent the remainder
of three days here and lie buried in the old Carter burying ground. It
was from their stones that this information was obtain in part. Other
relatives are buried there also though most of the markers are long
since destroyed, and the graves can't be found. a new highway cut
through this part of the farm, and it was badly mistreated.
Susan outlived James and married again. She had no children by this
marriage and was buried beside James at her request. Their family Bible
was taken to OK by one of the children, and we have hopes of it some day
being found. James and Susan had 6 sons that we have record of:
1. William Leftwich 3rd 26 March 1804 to 28 Dec 1890
2. John Calvin 6 Nov 1814 - 16 June
3. Robert Franklin ?1817 - ? 1889
4. Elerson
5. Virgin James
6. Ellison
END OF NINTH GENERATION
Left me know if you have questions. Good luck.
