Karen,
My line came from OH and MI with my great-grandfather Johnston coming to
America after the Civil War. It has been passed down that he was a
Merchant Marine from Brittain, jumped ship in Detroit, and changed his
name to Johnson/Johnston, but that has never been proven as of yet. As
far as I know, I have no Johnston ancestors in the South.
Sorry, but thanks for asking.
Robert

Robert, Pardon me for interrupting your discussion, but I noticed you
last name is JOHNSTON. Would you mind telling me who your Johnston
ancestor is. I descend from John JOHNSTON b. County Fermanagh, Ireland,
d. June 17, 1786 Newberry, SC, m. abt 1737 to Mary DOUGAN d. 1783
Newberry, SC. Their son Thomas JOHNSTON b. abt 1739 m. Mary COLLIER.
Then John COLLIER, son of James COLLIER b. 170304 County Donegel,
Ireland, m. Susannah DOUGAN., m. Margaret REGART. Their son Thomas
COLLIER b. abt 1770 m. Mary JOHNSTON. This is the last case of a Collier
marrying a Johnston in our family. After this their son Thomas J COLLIER
b. April 10, 1814 m. Feb 15, 1835 Washington Co,TN Mary BAILES?BAILS b.
abt 1816.
The COLLIERS first settled in Paxton township, Lancaster,PA when James
first arrived in America, where his sons James & John fought in the
Revolution against the British. Then moved to NC where they fought
along with their cousins the Johnstons and Dougans. After the war they
were being harrassed by the Loyalists so moved to Virginia & from there
some of the family moved to Greene Co,TN. My G Grandfather Thomas D
COLLIER, son of Thomas J COLLIER & Mary BAILES was b. about 1847
Cleveland Co,TN. Do any of these names or places sound familiar to you.
