Hi list members. I've hit a stone wall and need to know if someone out
there can help me or, perhaps, connect with my Carter line.
I am trying to determine who my grgrandparents were. My grandpa, Stephen
Goodson Carter, shows up on the 1850 Murray Co., GA census as follows:
William Carter -age 38-b VA
Ann E. -age 26-b TN
John W. -age 15-b NC
Stephen G. -age 13-b NC*
Mary C. -age 7 -b TN
James M. -age 20 -b NC
*Grandpa
Grandpa, Stephen G., was a member of the "First Georgia Regulars" during
the entire Civil War. Afterwards, he married Martha Ann
Shelton, from Bradley Co. ,TN. . They settled in Murray Co. GA and raised 8
children, including my Dad, Thomas Coffee Carter.
I believe that William was Stephen's father, but due to her age, I do not
feel that Ann could have been his mother. My feeling is that
John and James were his older brothers and that Mary was either a sister or
half-sister. I know that William and Ann were Mr and Mrs. as they are shown
on later census records in Murray Co. with additional children. Stephen's
Civil War Pension Records says he was born in Ashville, NC on August 14,
1837 and moved to Spring Place, Murray Co., GA in 1846.
Does any of this ring a bell with anyone, or can anyone help me or point me
in the right direction???? I will really appreciate your help and will be
happy to share everything that I have with anyone connected.
Thanks, Tom P. Carter Houston, TX
