Just passing along some information I recieved from the Ntl.
Archives today. I had ordered the military records for E.A. Carter, but
this E.A. Carter is NOT the same as my great-grandfather Emanuel A.
Carter. I do have my great-grandfather's records, and thought this may
have been a prior enlistment before he served with the 6th FL Co. H. It
is not. This is a different individual, who may or may not be related to
my line. Anyway...
The records I recieved for E. A. Carter (of the 15th AL Co. E)
consist of medical cards. One from the Medical Director's office,
Richmond, VA, notes he was "Admtted Mar. 28, 1863" to "Hospital: Chimbo
No.4". The other is a card from the Register of "Chimborazo Hospital No.
4, Richmond, Virginia". It notes a disease, "Catarrh" [? my question
mark], "Admitted Mch 28, 1863" and "Returned to Duty Apl. 19, 1863."
As
the 15th AL Co.E was made up almost entirely of men from Dale County,
AL, perhaps someone else on the list might know who his is, and if there
might be some link to my family of Carters. Please note: E.A. Carter
does not appear in any of the on-line rosters for 15th AL Co E, but his
records ARE there at the archives.
[I have also sent this message to the Dale County Rootsweb List]
Can anyone tell me whether or not the AL pension records index is
online? THANKS!

"Catarrh"
During the Civil War, catarrh, was a diagnosis given for conditions very
much the same as described below:
...discharge of runny or viscous fluid from the nose... [which] irritate[s]
or inflame[s] the mucous membranes lining the nasal cavity, and sometimes
the sinuses as well. Result is a stuffy, blocked-up nose, and also coughing
if catarrh drips down back of throat and onto vocal cords."
