Sharon,
Where did you get your info on our Loyalists relatives taking the
"profits of land sales"? Most of the ones who chose or had to leave,
sold their land to relatives--George and Joseph both sold to family
members. James sold to someone who is believed to be an in-law. Not
only that, but there is documentation that James lost quite a bit when
he left. He attempted to get reimbursement from the Brits and was only
partially compensated. It is fairly obvious from another record that
some of their land was confiscated after the war. I believe they pretty
much left with the shirts on their backs...and their lives. Also, the
CARTERs married Quakers, but have not been documented to be Quakers
themselves. Susannan Griffith married out of union with James CARTER.
Benjamin CARTERs sons were in Quaker records in Frederick Co., VA, but
their Uncle, Isaac HOLLINGSWORTH, was their guardian and a Quaker...thus
they went to church with him until they were "dismissed".

Dear Mr Ronald,
No one should suffer a "brick wall", so I am proposing a theory:
At least 3 Uncle Carters and other kin were loyalists in our Rev War out of
South Carolina and afterwards moved on to NE Florida-St Augustine, then English
territory.
Soon it became Spanish territory and those who refused to take this oath,
packed their bags and sailed off to Nova Scotia about 1785-6. It was a
devistating split in our family because we never saw them again. Children were
even left behind. Letters have been lost. A Mrs Marion Ledgerwood has the
best documents on this in her Letters. One Uncle George died in FL. But,
Uncle James and Joseph and many extended families shipped up to Nova Scotia.
They took most of the profits of land sales with them. They had large families
and I am not surprised they have filtered back into the United States. Our
Carters migrated a lot and are successful pioneers because they can build
anything, artisans and creative, and perservering.
My line goes James I, Richard, Robert, Rev Robert, Richard P, Joel
A, Martha Jane, Norval E, Harold E., Sharon Carter Lengfellner. Does my theory
sound pausible? If so, I'd be glad to send our family outline at your request.
Cousins, Sharon
