Be careful here Sharon. There were many George CARTERs. And if this
one is related to the Spotsylvania CARTERs, it is a completely different
line of CARTERs. I descend from James and Susannah Griffith CARTER
through their son Benjamin. However, I researched the Spotsylvania
CARTERs first...not even related unless way back in England. The
Spotsylvania CARTERs also had the same given names as the Bucks Co., PA
and Frederick Co., VA CARTERS-John, George, Benjamin, Joseph, etc.
These CARTERs also moved to SC, but it was Chester Co. and there are
wills, deeds, and Patriot Revolutionary War documents for them. Several
of them married into the LEE family in VA and after they moved to SC.
Your info on "our" CARTERs is a little confusing here also--Richard
and Margaret BRUCE CARTER were married in Frederick Co., VA, and their
children were born there--the chldren (James, Joseph, John and George)
first moved to Berkeley Co/Old 96 District/Laurens Co, SC with their
parents. They all but John were refugees in E. FL, and James and Joseph
then took flight, or rather took float, to Nova Scotia, where they were
given land grants from the King. George is believed to have died in E.
FL about 1784. His son John inherited his Laurens Co., SC, land, and it
is from this line that Mrs. Ledgerwood descends. So once again, the
profits from land were not absconded with--the land went to family
again. From Mrs. Ledgerwood's info, George's son John apparently
returned to SC as he registered his fathers deeds and paid taxes on the
SC land. It appears that George died soon after the close of the War,
sometime in 1784, in FL. However, it appears his wife Naomi TURK CARTER
and her children were in SC. John also had 2 sisters who were in
Laurens Co. after the War, Naomi and Ann CARTER... John, son of George
is in the 1800 Laurens Co., SC, census. It was this John, son of George
and the nephew of Joseph whom Joseph deeded his land in SC to in 1784
when Joseph was a refugee in E. FL --once again land to family. John,
son of Richard, does not appear to have fought for the Loyalists.
Also I don't see anything in Mrs. Ledgerwood's book (and it is a book
and not a letter, I have one and it is definitely a book and she calls
it a book) that says there is NO ocumentation for Joseph or James dying
in Nova Scotia. I am not saying there isn't, but if you have some I
would love a copy to add to my files.
One other question--My mother descends from Robert (>Richard>James).
Mrs. Ledgerwood says Robert's wife's name was Betty, but that the last
name is unknown. Have you found documentation that her last name is
PINSON?
I would also love to have that info.
