I've also read that slaves took the surnames of Jefferson, Washington, or
Lincoln following emancipation, people they admired.
I've been teaching in small rural areas in NC for 9 years, and many of my
black and white students have the same last names. Initially it gave me a
weird little jolt to think that some of them might actually be related because of
the actions of slaveholding families generations ago... -- Karen Nelson

It is a myth that most slaves took the names of their former owners. 90% of
slaves took another name. See Elsdon, American Names.

Hi Tammy,
You are so right, that most former slaves took on the surname of their
former slaveowner for various reasons. And although there are a lot of
CARTERs who were former slaves freed after the Civil War, the first person
of color who had the CARTER surname in America was imported as a slave to
Northampton Co., Virginia in 1640, PAUL CARTER. He and his wife,
HANNAH,were freed in 1665 by their master, FRANCIS PIGOT. So, one must keep
in mind that there were indeed a lot of CARTERs who were people of color in
America throughout this country's history.

Well Judith, true genealogist do not get offended over questions
because
they understand that it is past history and you have to ask to learn but
I was also told once, that a lot of black people that have the Carter
name, or any others by that note, were named after thier masters familiy
names. After a lot of reading and questions, I have learned that not all
slaves were mistreated and sometimes they chose to have thier masters
name as thier own surname and did. That makes searching harder for us
but it is a fact of the past, so I am told or read.....
