Have hit a brick wall tracing these Carters:
WILLIAM JAMES "JIMMY" CARTER b. poss NC d. 1838 Cleveland, Bradley
County, TN; buried Ft. Hill Cemetery. (Cleveland Public library verifies
his burial site since he was the second person to be buried there and he
was the first sheriff of Bradley County, TN.)
Wm. James Carter m. RUTH(A) MCFARLAND (following information obtained
from MyFamily.com-submitter Homer Carter) June 5, 1825, Rhea County, TN.
Children:
1. ELIZABETH ANN "BETSY" CARTER, b. Nov 2, 1829, Rhea County, TN; d.
Oct 27, 1915, Georgetown, Meigs County, TN, buried Old Lee Cemetery,
Cleveland, Bradley County, TN (Sometimes called the Seaborn Graveyard).
[I have Elizabeth's complete line from her on down as she married into
my family line and all facts are accounted for and proven. Additionally,
there was an obit posted in the Cleveland Daily Journal and Banner in
1915 which named her father William James Carter in the obit stating he
was the first sheriff of Bradley County and the fact that he was the
second person to have been buried in Ft. Hill Cemetery.]
2. WILLIAM LANDON CARTER, (note-this information also from
MyFamily.com-submitter Homer Carter-wish I could find him) b. Mar 20,
1835, Dayton, Rhea County, TN; d. Oct 1925, Holden, Johnson County,
Missouri; m. ADDIE BELL KIRTLEY, Dec 10, 1878, Johnson County, Missouri;
b. Feb 2 1859, New London, Ralls County, Missouri; d. December 21, 1935,
Holden, Johnson County, Missouri.
FACTS: It is known to me from my grandmother that Wm James Carter is my
4th gr grandfather. I have a letter that my grandmother wrote back in
the 1970's to my mother in re the Carter's stating that she would get
the family history together, but she never did. She has since passed
away.
I cannot at this time prove that William Landon Carter is the son of Wm
James Carter other than by what was listed on
MyFamily.com and do not
have a contact method to reach the submitter of the information, Homer
Carter. There is a large age difference between Wm Landon and his wife
in MO. Secondly, I've been told by another Carter researcher, and I
admit I am new to researching Carters, that the name Landon figures
prominently in another branch of Carter's to which I am unfamiliar with.
I have seen on the GenForum boards references to a Wm Landon Carter
being in Arkansas, but it is unknown to me if it is the same one or not.
It could well account for the age difference by the time he got to MO.
Any, and I do mean ANY assistance/guidance would be gratefully
appreciated. I've researched 5 other family lines quite successfully and
not run into the kind of mazes that I have incurred in the Carters.
Thanks,
Kim
