Notes on William Carter.
He died at the age of 90. Along with the children mentioned in his
will, Richard Drake, Daniel Carter, Giles, Carter, Margaret Carter, Barbary
Remy, Ann Claytor, Elenor Carter and Martha Carter, and the son, William
Carter, Junr. who died in 1720, it is possible that the Mary Carter who was
the mistress of John Champe, Sr. is also his daughter. The Richard Drake that
he calls his son is probably the son of his wife, Elenor, who possibly
married a Drake before she married him. No proof. It is also possible that
her maiden name was Mathews (daughter of Giles Mathews), but again, no proof.
The Giles Carter of the will dated 7 Feb 1745 in King George Co., VA is
NOT the son of this William Carter. The Giles Carter of the will dated 7 Feb
1745 could not write his name - he made his mark. The Gyles Carter, son of
William Carter wife Elenor, could sign his name and it was written Gyles.
Whether this means anything or not, I don't know.
William Carter, wife Elenor was a contemporary of Robert "King" Carter
(born abt. 1662, d 14 Aug 1732 in Lancaster Co., VA) and Capt. Thomas Carter
(b. abt 1630, d Oct. 22, 1700, also of Lancaster Co., VA, wife Katherine
Dale. There was a so a Giles Carter in Henrico Co., VA who died about 1700
and is believed to be the father of Giles Carter Jr., will of 1745, of King
George Co., VA.
All these men had many children and sorting them out is a problem. Alex
