Its great that the Wm. Carter & Mary Goodloe line will be discussed
again. Here is what I have:
First, I'll take the question about Christ Church Parish:
Source: Family Histories of Middlesex Co., VA compiled by DeBusk, Price
and Gray
published in 1982, Ralph Wormely Branch, APVA.......p. 8
Parish Vestry
"The area within present day Middlesex Co. was at first included in
Lancaster Parish. Prior to 1666 the parish was divided, separated by the
Rappahannock River, and named Lancaster and Pyanketank. In January of
1666, the parishes were united under the name of Lancaster Parish. A new
mother-church Christ Church was to be built between "Brandon" and
Rosegill". The parish was later separated to form Christ Church, Lancaster
and Christ Church, Middlesex."
As for the children of Wm. Carter and 1) Penelope Pew: Mary, Thomas,
Elizabeth and William.
Children of Wm. Carter and Mary Goodloe: George, Phillip, Ann, Joseph,
Robert, Mary & William.
As for John who md. Mary Rice...so far no absolute proof has surfaced. His
Will leads us to a sister named Sarah. I have time and again tried to see
if he could be a brother of William b. ca. 1660, but it just doesn't figure
out date wise for the other people mentioned in his Will.
John Carter mentioned a nephew William Carter. We know that there was a
Joseph Carter who md. Mary Grant in 1687 and had a son William baptized 15
June 1690 (Christ Church Parish Rcds, p. 40.), so was the nephew this
William or the William, son of William Carter and Penelope Pew b. 1687?
Some researchers say that Mary Carter (widow of John Carter) md. Curtis
Hardee. John Carter, in his Will mentions his godson, John Hardee....what
is this connection? By the way...I have found no viable proof that Curtis
Hardee md. a Mary Carter. He md. Eliz. Tillman 13 Nov. 1735 (CCPR...p.
169) and Elizabeth Hardee d. 26 Dec. 1744. Supposedly, he md. Mary Carter
on 23 Nov. 1745, however, CCPR do not show a marriage for them. Instead, I
find in Marriages of some VA Residents, 1607-1800 by Dorothy Wulfeck
"Charles Hardee md. 23 Nov 1745, Mary (____) Carter, widow. Sur. Thomas
Berry. Middlesex Co., Marriage Bond". So did someone read a marriage bond
wrong or what?
Still, these dates lead me to believe that John Carter was not a brother to
William b. 1660, so the likelihood that he was Wm. Carter & Mary Goodloe is
very strong.
Because of John's Will where he names his "brother" (b-i-l) Mark Wheeler,
leads us to Sarah Carter.
What is interesting is that John Carter names Mark Wheeler, but not Sarah
who was still living (see p. 182, Virginia County Recds...Spotsylvania Co.,
VA, Vol. I where Mark and Sarah Wheeler on 5 Jan. 1749 conveyed 100 ac. to
Joseph Carter. John Carter named his sister Elizabeth Daniel, as well as
his "brother" (b-i-l) Robert Daniel...so he didn't name all his siblings.
The only proof that we may ever get for John, Sarah, Penelope and Elizabeth
as the children of Wm.
Carter may be only circumstantial, however, what we need to do is build a
"Chain of Evidence in which each link is strong enough to support the next
and in which each link is connected with the one before by as much evidence
as it is possible to obtain, thereby making the connection as strong as
genealogical evidence will allow." (Genealogical Research Standards by
Derek Harland).
I have a copy of the Will of William Carter dated 13 Nov. 1709, probated 5
Feb. 1711 and there is a question as to why he didn't provide for all of
his children. When I've run into this before, usually there are deeds for
the other children, but usually they were at least 16 yrs old. When Wm.
wrote his Will in 1709, Joseph (my ancestor) was only 5 yrs old. However,
when you look at the dates & ages of the other children, they were all
under 15 yrs old. Phillip was a little over 15, so that may account for
the way he wrote his Wll. He did say in his Will....." I give and bequeath
unto my Loving wife Mary Carter all the rest and residue of personall
estate During her Naturall life and after her Deces to be Equally divided
amongst her Children born of her body". My question then is why did he
name George and Phillip? Did that mean "only" the children he didn't name?
What's interesting is that then in her Will dated 2 April 1741, probated 6
Nov. 1744 she gives two Negro girls to her daughter Mary (Bristow) Ammon,
her best bed and furniture to her grandson Wm. Daniel and all the rest of
her estate to her son Jedediah Bristow and his heirs. None of her "Carter"
children were named. There was a Mary Carter as witness, who was more than
likely, Mary Rice Carter....John Carter's wife. She was probably being
careful not to have him involved because he may have been sick. He wrote
his Will 24 Jan. 1741, so she may have felt he might not be around for a
probate of hers.
Also, one of the witnesses for John Bristow when he made is Will was Mary
Rice. The Will was written 20 Feb. 1716 & probated 20 Feb. 1716...was this
the same Mary Rice that md. John Carter in Oct. 1717?
Here are some additions to the info you posted earlier:
Mary b. abt. Sept. 1681 md. Mr. Hugat/Hughatt, not Hughes) (Wm. Carter's Will)
Elizabeth b. abt. May 1686 md. Robert Daniel (John's Will and Mary Goodloe
Carter Bristow's Will)
William b. abt. Oct. 1687 md. Doreas
Phillip b. Dec. 1693 d. Feb. 1720 (he never md.)
Penelope b. abt. June 1694 **(stillborn?)
Mary gave birth to Phillip on the 10th of Dec. 1693 and Penelope was b.
abt. June 1694...that would mean that Mary got pregnant very soon after
Phillip's birth (which is very possible) and that Penelope was b. at 6 or 7
months and didn't survive (which is possible).
Mary Goodloe Carter & John Bristow only had two children: Jedediah and
Mary. The Ann/Anne Bristow you spoke of was John Bristow's by his 1st
wife, Michal Nicholls.
Hope this helps,
Margaret
