Lynn,
The information you have below was from my old Gedcom. I believe I have recently
downloaded a more current one with the updated information. Hopefully the instructions
on my Gedcom are listed there, but where there is a question mark next to a name, that
means I have not verified the information yet, or that I am not postive this is the
parents or relationship to the person before them. When I have varified information
there is no question mark. That way I can get the information out to the public, and
get people to write and ask questions which many times help resolve the verification.
So, at one time I thought Bailey's parents were John Carter & Hannah Chew. So,
I had a question mark next to John Carter's name to insinuate I wasn't sure he was
the father of Bailey. But, this past year my husband had a cousin who submitted the
DNA (which would be the same Carter line as my husband), and it was a perfect match with a
gentleman who can prove his !
descent from William Carter & Mary Goodloe. Wm & Mary and their sons would
have been my next choice for family for Bailey if the John & Hannah did not pan out,
which it didn't. After getting those DNA results, it proved that Bailey is
definitely from the Wm & Mary lineup. But I still don't know exactly how. I
was told that if you have an EXACT 26/26 match with another person on DNA, then it usually
shows a match within 7-8 generations back. William & Mary Carter would actually be
10-11 generations back from my husband (and his cousin who submitted the DNA), and with
the other gentleman that they matched up with. William Carter and Mary Goodloe are old
enough to actually be Bailey's grandparents or gr-grandparents. So, what I am
trying to do is start with Wm & Mary, and research all of their sons (which includes
your Joseph), and all of their sons, to try to find one who either no one has a list of
their children, or a son that might have a middle in!
itial of 'B'.
1) For instance, William, son of William & Mary has not been very well documented
from what I can tell. No one seems to even have a wife's name for him. Did he
have a son named Bailey?
2) Thomas, son of Wm. & Mary, I can't seem to find much on him. Did he have a
son named Bailey?
3) Joseph, son of Wm. & Mary (this is your line), states ----Codicil to his Will -
written Oct 13, 1783, witnesses Edward Herndon and John Mitchell, recites, "whereas
since making the within will, my daughter Elizabeth Matilda has been born, she shall be
considered and have an equal share in the division of my estate with my five younger
children." Could one of the younger children he was referring to but did not name
be Bailey?
Even though we have the DNA, we still have to find the tie between Bailey and
William & Mary Carter. But, the great news is, I can stay with that line in
researching, and I know I don't have to look in all of those other hundreds of Carters
that were in Virginia! :~).
By the way, any help on this line from anyone would be greatly appreciate.
Kathy Wells.

Kathy, I had found the below, as being the Bailey Carter from Spotsylvania Co. I notice
know there is a question mark after his name. Do you think someone just attached him there
as so often happens. (I've found 6 different trees with my Joseph attached). I guess
if the dates and places match use it is their motto. Glad you found a match. That at least
should help narrow your searching.
