The first correspondence that my Great Aunt Rachel Carter Barnes had from
Effie G. Wilson of Marrowbone, Kentucky was written in 1968. She states that
there are eleven Carters listed in this area.
We have checked the Cumberland Co tax list for James Madison Carter. He is
married to Mary Ann Turner in 1841. His death date is believed to be 1848 and
she died in 1855.
They had three sons-Cornelius Carter born January 14, 1844-died in Wright
City, Mo on September 9, 1931.
Jesse Marshall Carter born May 7, 1846-died November 24, 1921 in Hartville,
Mo
(This is my great-grandfather)
Jerry(Jeremiah) Madison Carter born May 3, 1848-died in Crawford City, IN
Their mother's parents were Larkin Turner and Jane Heard
We believe that James Madison Carter is the third child and youngest son of
Josiah Carter, SR. and Polly(May) Baker.
In 1855, when(Ann Turner) her children wre 11, 9, and 7, Mary Ann Turner
died of consumption(Pulmonary TB) Subsequently her children wer4 raised in
three separate homes-Cornelius by his great uncle Thomas Carter, brother of
Josiah Carter (who was the son of Charles Carter). Jesse Marshall was raised by
his mother's sisiter Rachel and her husband Joseph Truner and moved to
Missouri with them in 1856. Jerry stayed with Larkin Turner until he died in 1857,
then Probably went with his mother's brother Jerry Turner.
(Jerry served as an aide to his uncle Jerry Turner in the Civil War until he
was old enought to enlist.)
We went the Cumberland Co KY several years ago and visited with some Turners
and an Historian but the courthouse burned at some point and many records
were lost.
I would love to break the code and get some more proof. I am a DAR member
and would like to add some additiona.
See if any of this information is helpful.
I have several letter that were written in the 60's.
