Hi Dale,
Note sure if our CARTER line descends from them, but we suspect our line
goes back to lower SC in the early 1800s.
I'm a native of Savannah, GA (Chatham County) and we can go back to a
Benjamin CARTER who would have been born about 1830 in Chatham County.
Before that, we're unsure but we think he may have been a son of John
Alexander CARTER Sr., and Sarah STOKES . . . . both of whom are reportedly
from Beaufort or Colleton County SC. They are buried in Chatham County in
Elkens Cemetery.
Our Benjamin was married twice, first to a Mary RUSHING (1851) and then to
Mary TILLMAN (1853) whom we descend. They had at least 3 children Benjamin
Franklin CARTER, David F. CARTER, and Robert CARTER who is my direct
ancestor. He married Josephine LIGHTSEY, a daughter of Isaac LIGHTSEY (of
SC) and Caroline BARBER (of Bryan or Brooks County, GA).
Our Chatham County lines connect to surnames of DICKERSON, WELLS, GROOVER,
LIGHTSEY, HORNING, BARBER, SIKES, some of whom are in Liberty County, GA and
other surrounding counties.
