Laura, I noticed several responses on Gen Forum regarding Carter genealogy, and thought
that, perhaps, you could help me.
My grandpa, Stephen Goodson Carter, was b. in Ashville, NC on Aug. 14, 1837 and migrated
to Spring Place , Murray County, GA in 1846. The 1850 census for Murray county shows him
in the household of William Carter, 38, b. VA; Ann E. Carter, 26, b.TN,; John W., 15, b.NC
; Stephen G., (my grandpa) ,13, b.NC; Mary C., 7, b. TN; and James M., 20, b. NC.
I believe William and Ann E. to be Stephen's parents, but have been unable to
confirm that. Anyway, I have been going with the assumption that they are and have been
trying to locate Williams parents or any other info on him.
I know that William and Ann had two additional children after settling in Spring Place,
as the 1870 census shows Samuel B., age 13, and Juda, age 1.
I have Stephen's family info from his Civil War service forward, but have not been
able to find anything back before the 1850 census except the info on his service records
and his Civil War Pension Application. His Death Certificate has no information. He died
on March 30, 1926 and is buried in the Spring Place Cemetery. He was married to Martha Ann
Shelton, from Bradley County, TN, in Oct. 1868. They raised 8 children in Spring Place ,
including my dad, Thomas Coffee Carter. Their children, in order of birth were; Fannie
Elizabeth (1869-1943), William Shelton (1872-1949), Edwin Henry L. (1874-1949), John
Lester (1878-1942), Thomas Coffee (1882-1954), Robert Lee(1885-1967), Samuel Bayless
(1888-1972) and Sue M. (1891-1969).
I have been to The Old Buncombe County Genealogical Society and Library on Tunnel Rd. in
Ashville, but found nothing. So, seeing your responses on Gen Forum, thought I'd
contact you and see if you are familar with any of my tree. Can you help me???
Also, where is Mars Hill College located?
Thanks for listening and for any help you might be able to offer.
