Chris, I appologize for any insult you may have felt from my statement... Jobe is shown on
the 1850 census as "Deaf & Dumb". which is why I put the quotes on it, Many
still refer to a person who is deaf and has a speech impediment as deaf & Dumb. No
detriment was intended..

Some are hereditary some are not. I was born with a hearing loss due to my mother
contracting Rubella. I wear a hearing aid that helps me hear and I do speak fairly well
and of course I am not dumb. Most of the hearing impaired that I knew were fairly dumb but
that goes with their hearing loss. But I was fortunate because I was raised in a very
large family. I have 7 brothers and 4 sisters which forced me to learn how to speak well
and hear as well. I never went to a deaf school anytime in my life. I went to a public
school but I was not the smartest student but I did pretty well for a hearing impaired

Seeking information on any CARTER, who is shown as "DEAF & DUMB". Anywhere,
any time. Actually I jave a Job/Jobe CARTER, born about 1807 listed as Deaf & Dumb...
If it is hereditary, anyone deaf & dumb, might help me find my line... Have been
looking for 35+ years... Thanks...

Yeah I know that. It is no problem from that statement. I agree that is what they put down
back then because thats what they thought they were and still a lot of people still think
that. They also called them mutes as well before they understood deafness or hearing
impairment. Hence Deaf, Dumb and Mute is what I have heard when I was growing up and quite
frankly that is insult to me because I am not mute, dumb but am deaf. I was just trying to
clarify the differences in hererditary and being born with deafness. Mine is not
hereditary.
