"Grand Ole Opry actually began as The WSM Barn Dance in November of 1925, as
a one-hour showcase for rural music. By the 1930s, the show had expanded to
four hours and station WSM/Nashville had expanded to 50,000 watts, making
the show a Saturday night musical tradition in nearly 30 states. In 1939,
the Grand Ole Opry began an affiliation with NBC that lasted until 1957."
I found no info on Nick or Old Nick Carter. There was a radio actor name
Nicked Carter who was on an actor on a Mystery type show in the 1940's,
However, he was too young to be your guy.
According to the census records I transcribed they resided at 1801 18th
Avenue, not 1804.

You may want to try to obtain an obituary for this guy. If he really was a
musician it should be mentioned in an obituary.

Who is he??
This is an unusual request. A couple of years ago I "adopted" a dear
elderly
woman that I met at a nursing home when my own mother required some after
surgery rehab. Miss Margaret (now 86) has dementia yet she recalls with
great
clarity her childhood visiting with her grandparents, Jerome aka "Old
Nick
Carter" b1866 KY and her grandmother Lutitia aka Lillian b1869 KY. She
say they
lived in Nashville. I have verified this.
Miss Margaret associates an address in north Nashville Tennessee at 1804 -
18th Avenue North at Buchanan Street. Before living with her grandparents
(her
mother died in 1927 when she was 3) her father placed her and her 2
siblings
in St. Mary's Orphanage on White Bridge Road Westend Nashville. [It is
now
called St. Mary's Villa for Girls.] Miss Margaret lived at St. Mary's
from
approximately 1926-1936.
Old Nick Carter was supposedly, in the day, a well known musician known in
the Nashville, TN area in the early 1900's and supposedly played at the
Grand
'Ole Oprey. I have never been able to verify this. HAS ANYONE EVER HEARD
OF
HIM??
Old Nick aka Rome J Carter is in the 1900 Graysville Alabama census &
1910/20/30 Davidson Tennessee census. I find nothing specific about him
to share
with Miss Margaret. I don't think census records will mean mush to her
and will
be difficult for her to read.
She has shared with me all of her family history she knows in the hopes
that
someone cares enough [about her] to write it down. And I have written it
all
down. There's little else I can do to satisfy her yearning to turn back
the
clock to a healthier and happier state of mind. It is apparent the only
connection to a real family comes from her stay at St. Mary' and at
1804 - 18th
Avenue North at Buchanan Street.
Does anyone know any history about this address? I goggled mapped it and
it
is now an asphalt parking lot attached to some kind of trucking company.
St. Mary's Villa has no photo's of their building on their website.
So I guess my request is unusual as I'm not sure what I can do for Miss
Margaret except what I've done. I have some history if anyone is
interested. I'd
love to know ANYTHING about Old Nick Carter. Thanks.
Jennifer Nichols

I have no idea if this is of any value, but from an old message some years
ago, there was a Rome Carter born in Noshville, son of Daniel E. Carter and
Martha Cooper. His siblings were John, Christopher, William, Nora, Alice,
Sarah, Fred, Maude, Lee, Lulu and Edna.
