Boy, this is spooky!
My Alfred B. Carter's son William George Carter who married Alverta Dunning
had twin sons named Alfred and Albert, too! My twins were born on June 4,
1906.
I checked my data, but no James Carter in or near the right date -- yet!
There are missing lines still, so the connection may be there. Do you know
what part of MD?
My family left Chester Co., PA, when Daniel Carter and at least some of his
children moved to Cecil County, MD. Daniel Carter's son James Parker
Carter's wife Frances A. Barcus was apparently from Caroline County, MD -- or
her mother had moved there some time, perhaps after Frances' marriage to
James in Cecil Co.
After the death of James in 1848, his three children were split up.
His wife Frances A. (Barcus) Carter moved back to the Denton, Caroline Co.,
MD, and is shown in the 1850 census living with her mother, Frances A.
Barcus, and her daughter, Elizabeth Carter, age 3. George, age 5, is shown
still living in Cecil Co., MD, with his grandparents, Daniel and Elizabeth
(Parker) Carter. Alfred, age 9, is also still living in Cecil Co., shown in
the 1850 census living with his Uncle Daniel (Jr.)'s family.
In 1860, Frances had remarried to William Hubbard in Cecil Co., MD.
Living with Frances A. (Barcus, formerly Carter) and William Hubbard are
Frances' daughter Elizabeth, age 13, and her son George, age 16; two census
homes away, son Alfred B., age 19, is living with a neighbor's family. Both
George and Alfred B. are shown working on farms AND attending school --
unusual, it would seem, for someone Alfred's age. Daughter Elizabeth is also
shown attending school. They have begun to acquire half siblings --
Hubbard's children.
Oh! Interesting. Frances seems to have taken about six years off her
age between the 1850 and 1860 census lists. She is listed as 26 in 1850 and
as 30 in 1860 -- I wonder if her 18-year-old husband knew how old she was
when he married her in Dec. 1850? (He is listed as 28 in the 1850 census
which would have made him 18, or maybe 19, when he married in Dec.) Given
that Frances had children ages 3, 5, and 9 according to the 1850 census, and
assuming that William Hubbard knew about all of the children and not just
about Elizabeth, he must have known his wife was older, but did he know how
much older? (Or maybe his age is incorrect in the 1860 census and he was
actually older than 28 -- but then why would Frances -- or William? -- lie to
the census taker?) Just one of those funny family research inconsistencies!
Haven't found her death certificate or gravestone yet to see what is listed
on it!
As you can see, despite our duplication of names in our families, Judy, we do
not yet show how, or if, they are connected. Do you know from what county
(counties) in MD that your Carters hailed? Where they lived and/or were
born?
As you request, I will surely keep your Ohio Carters in mind -- especially
since in the 1850 census, George is listed as having been born in OH! (In
1860, he is shown born in MD.) There are also family oral history tales of
William Carter's family heading west to OH and returning to MD. William is
the oldest son of Alfred B. Perhaps the tale was actually about William's
father Alfred's family???
