Hi Sheila,
I am cleaning out my files and found your memos enclosed. I did not
receive the lineal chart of Merry Carter ...if I remembered to ask for it.
I just figured out that the Illinois Land Patent purchased in
Washington Co by "Mary Carter" actually could have been "Merry Carter"
and
would explain my brick wall. My cousin and Dad visited Black Oak Ridge
Cemetery in Buford, Jefferson Co, IL and discovered Joel Carter and wife,
Mary E (Cole) Carter buried but we could never find his history. I have
pieced together suppositions and proved it that way. I even have this line
originating in Bedford Co, VA, then migrating to Williamson Co, TN, then
wagon train to Washington and Jefferson Co, IL where they died. Please
help. this is the first spark I've had in a long time.
Joel A Carter b 1815-20 m 1838 to Mary E Cole b 1822 and d 1872.
Hopefully your cousin,
Sharon Carter Lengfellner

Hi, I have most of his children as I am a descendent of Joel Carter.
I
will
have to get them out and will send them to you by this weekend if
that is
okay.
William Merriman was generally listed a Merry Carter. As several of his
descendents have the same name you will have to determine which by
location
(VA) and dates. The other Merrys were in Tennessee (2) and one in
Kentucky.
Also on migrated from Tennessee to the west. Merry was in the French
and
Indian War and is listed on several lists as helping with the Revolution.
One or two sons were lost in the Revolutionand there was at least one set
of
twins. Twins are a recurring thing in this line of Carters.
Augustine
Leftwich was Frances' father and sold land to Merry in Bedford County,
VA.
The children migrated to Davidson County, Tennessee and then one
that I
know of to Kentucky (my
line). Joel (Leftwich) Carter. The name Leftwich has been handed down
through the Carter and St. Clair lines for at least 4 generations. There
was a James that I can remember in
Tennessee that My Joel's son Merry went to live with and only returned to
Breckinridge County, Ky after Joel's death to look after his mother.
Isaac St. Clair was the father of Isaac St. Clair that also came to
Breckinridge County Ky. Old Isaac (Bedford County, VA) was give the
power
of attorney to sell Merry place after his death. Young Isaac was
married
to
Joel Leftwich Carters daughter.
I will send you the list of children when I can pull them up. All of this
is just from memory.
Hope this helps.
Sheila

Leftwich's children. William was born 1730, VA and died 1818. Frances
Leftwich was born 1738 and died Aug. 24. 1819. I would really appreciate
it,
if someone can give me this information. Thanks in advance. Joani
