Subject: [CARTER-L] Re: Migration Trends
I received many, many responses... There seemed to be no particular
reason
for the pattern or destination of the migrants...Everything from Anti
Slavery beliefs, Free or low cost land, Sickness at the old home, for
their
health,(Someone told them to get out of town) Wanderlust, religious
beliefs,(Such as the Mormans)
Some went because relatives had gone before them...
The particular route chosen apparently was due to the roads or trails that
existed, (the National Road, The buffalo Trace from Jeffersonville to
Vincennes, etc.)There was a trail early that ran along what is now US231,
from Rockport to Lafayette.
I did not really come up with any new reasons for the group, follow the
leader type, migrations. Perhaps I will in the future.
Best regards, and thanks for the responses.
