I did the mtDNA test with FamilyTreeDNA back in the summer of 2004. I learned that I am
Haplogroup "H" (a.k.a. Clan Helena) which is the most common Haplogroup for
people of European ancestry.
From FamilyTreeDNA I received a complete listing of my mtDNA data,
including my mutations from the Cambridge Reference Sequence (CRS). I have received
information on over 100 High Resolution mtDNA matches but unfortunately I have not yet
been able to make the paper-trail connection with any of them but one was intriguingly
close as her maternal line came from the same area in Virginia as mine and some of the
surnames were in common.
Remember, mtDNA is passed from mother to child. That is,
the mtDNA is a person's direct Maternal line only.
If you want to do the Paternal line (like a traditional surname) then you have to have a
male do the Y-DNA test.
My Maternal line is known back to Mary "Polly" Stevens who married John
Carter/1838 of Oglethorpe County, Georgia who was the son of Thomas Carter/1796 of
Mecklenburg County, Virginia who was a grandson of Thomas Carter, Sr./1738 of Goochland
County, Virginia. This Carter family is Group # 20 in the Y-DNA Surname Project.

haven't gotten back the results yet but have no idea what to do with them when I do
get them. Have any others done this mtDNA and have you been able to learn anything from
it? Thanks, Jean > > -------------------------------
