Will of Jesse Carter:
In the name of God amen, I Jesse Carter of Greenville District and State of South Carolina
being at this time in my usual sound mind and memory calling to mind the uncertainty of
human life, do by these presents make and establish this my last will and Testament in
manner following.
Viz: After my Just debts are honestly paid, I give and bequeath unto my beloved wife my
whole estate real and personal, for the time, under the restriction, and upon the
condition following,
Viz: As long as she shall remain a widow my will and desire is that she keep my children
together, until they arrive at twenty one years of age and so far as is, or may be thought
consistent with the Income of my small estate, to spare no part thereof for their
education in English only, and if from the care and Industry that may be used a
sufficiency cannot be raised for that purpose my will is that Winney with her three
children be sold, and the amount of sale be put out to Interest, or otherwise at the
discretion of my executors & executrix herein after named for the purpose of educating
my children.
My two Daughters I wish to be learned to read, and write well, and a few examples in
Arithmetic, my two sons to be learned as much of English sciences as the recourses of my
estate will Justify and their education to be wholly under the direction of my Executors
herein after named, I have already willed that my children be kept & raised together,
but I don't mean that part to operate against their education should circumstances
require their being boarded out to go to school.
What I mean by the time, is , until my children arrive at lawful age or marrys, and as
that Period arrives to have their equal parts of what shall remain of my estate after
their education, and that in all cases to be determined by my executrix & Executors
herein after named and the more Effectually to avoid suits at Law in case of their
disagreement a Majority of them in all cases I wish to be decisive.
And lastly I nominate my beloved wife Executrix and my trusty friends Messrs James
Harrison Senior and John Hampton Harrison Executors of this my last will and Testament,
hereby revoking all other will or wills by me heretofore made, declaring this only to be
my last will and Testament.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal this twentieth day of May A. D.
