Looking for descendants of ENOCH and MAHALA ANN (SHOEMAKER) CARTER. They were in Harrison
Twp., Gallia Co., OH during the 1850 census. Enoch b abt. 1827-28 and Mahala Ann abt.
1828-29, both, according to this census, in Ohio. Estimating they married around 1848-49.
By the 1860 census they were living in Elm Twp., Putnam Co., MO. They had at least the
following children: William F., Melinda E., Nancy J., John, Harrison, Mary, Dora, Tempa,
and David. They continued to live in Putnam Co., MO through the 1880 census. Sons, James
A. and William F. died in 1863; Enoch died in 1896; Mahala Ann in 1911. They are buried at
Hartford CE in Putnam Co.
The interest in this family is twofold. I am looking for evidence that
Enoch's parents were James and Nancy Carter also in Harrison Twp., Gallia Co., OH
during the 1850 census. Secondly, looking for living male descendants of Enoch Carter
that would consider DNA testing to see if there might be a relationship between this
family line of Carters and the John Carter b 1769 in Virginia and then moving to Gallia
Co., OH in the early 1800's where he and wife, Mary Lahr, raised their children.
The John Carter line of Gallia Co., OH is currently in the process of DNA
testing. Information gained from other Gallia Co., OH Carter lines could be helpful in
research. Please contact me if you have helpful information and interest.
