I am descended from William Carter who died in 1810 in Halifax County,
NC. His will identifies one of his sons as Theodrick (several different
spellings) Carter. Since that name is so unusual, I suspect (with no
proof) that William (d. 1810) is a son of Theodrick Carter whose will
was probated in Prince Edward County, VA, in 1777. This Theodricks
father was also Theodrick (whose will was probated in 1737 in Henrico
County, VA). His father was Giles Carter (1634 - 1699/1700). The names
Giles and Theodrick reappear in different generations and are unique to
this Carter line with only the one exception below I know of.
Landon is apparently unique to the Col. John Carter line which includes
Robert King Carter of Virginia. I believe that one of King Carters
sons was named Landon and the name was given to different persons in the
line.
All of this seems nice and neat until someone names a son Giles Landon
Carter, using two given names which traditionally came from different
Carter lines. Id like to know the reasoning behind that. Did a male
Carter of one line marry a female Carter from the the other line?
I recently saw some information on Giles Landon Carter. I believe it
was from the microfilms of the Rev. War Pension Application files but I
do not remember for certain. I skimmed the Carter pension applications
looking for something to help on my line. Whatever I saw on Giles
Landon Carter made me think his information was of no help to me.
I welcome comments including those which point out the errors of my
thinking.
