My great grandparents were JOHN and FRANCES CARTER.
I found them and their children living in Newton
County, MO in the 1880 census. Children listed in
that census were Elizabeth, Emma, Carrie, George and
David, ranging in age from 14 to 3. According to the
census, all family members had been born in IL except
Frances, who was born in VA. Carrie was my
grandmother, Bertha Caroline Carter, born in Dec. of
1872.
An older sister, Mary Melinda Carter, had married
Benjamin Turner in Newton Co. in the spring of 1880.
Another child, Ida Mae Carter, was born in Newton
County in 1881.
John Carter was born approx. 1841.
I believe I found the same family in Jasper County IL
in the 1870 census. Children were:
Mary, Jane, Ann, Emma and an infant son.
Mary's age corresponded to that of my Mary.
Ann's age was approximately the same as Elizabeth.
Emma's age was the same in both census.
Parents' ages were approximately the same in both
censuses and places of birth were the same.
There was a marriage between JOHN CARTER and FRANCES
CATHERINE KIBLER in Jasper Co. IL in 1860. This
couple could have been the people listed above, i/e my
g. grandparents.
In the 1850 Jasper Co. census, there was a JAMES
CARTER, married to ELIZA EVANS. It was a 2nd
marriage. They were married in 1850. I couldn't read
some of the children's names in the census, but there
was a Solomon, JOHN(age 9), and two sisters. One
might have been Cynthia. There were also 3 Evans
children in the household.
James' age was 40 and I think his birthplace said KY.
Very hard to read.
Does this fit into anybody's Carter family history?
Thanks,
Nancy
