Mallie F. Carter Nichols, of Coronado and Penryn,
California, passed away peacefully in her sleep on
April 5, 2008. Born on 15 November 1916 in the Texas
Panhandle at Hedley, Donley Co., the daughter of
Raymond Carter and Mary "Emma" Beach. Having reached
the age of 91 years. She was the widow of Richard
Virgil "Nick" Nichols. They came to Coronado from
Borger, Texas in 1937 to work for the Latham's in
their drug stores and liquor store. Mallie cooked at
the Coronado Pharmacy for many, many years and later
worked in the dietary department of the Coronado
Hospital. Many people grew up in Coronado enjoying
Mallie's cooking, especially her famous hamburgers!
She retired from the Coronado Hospital in 1981 and
went up to the Sacramento area to become a rancher on
her daughter Joan's horse ranch, helping raise world
and national champions, including one who was inducted
into the Appaloosa Horse Club Hall of
Fame in 1994. Mallie not only helped raise horses, she
also raised miniature dachshund's right up till the
time of her death.
She was a member of the Oliver Wetherbee Chapter,
NSDAR and the Crown Colony Chapter of the Colonial
Dames XVII Century.
She is survived by her two daughters, both natives of
Coronado, Helen Nichols Murphy Battleson of Coronado,
California and Joan Nichols Simmons Peachey of Penryn,
California, her beloved son-in-laws Dave Murphy of
Coronado and San Diego and Lawrence Peachey of Penryn,
CA. She leaves behind ten grandchildren, David Murphy,
Mallory Murphy Alisea, Mary Helen Murphy Arndt, Danny
Murphy, Kelley Murphy, Rachel Battleson, Regina
Battleson, Penny Domschot, Shane Simmons, & Tom
Simmons. Sixteen great-grandchildren and one
great-great-grandson. She is also survived by her
sister, Maxine Carter Bell of Marble Falls, TX, and
many nieces and nephews in Texas and California. Her
only brother James David Carter of West Covina, CA and
her sister Lucille Carter Holland West Case of
Amarillo, TX preceded her in death.
Mallie will be remembered for her remarkable ability
to manage her household on the meagerest of incomes
throughout her child rearing years and for wonderful
cooking and compassion for others. She continued to
maintain her Coronado home on 8th Street where to this
day family members still reside.
Mallie's ashes will be taken care of by the Neptune
Society. In lieu of flowers, since she had so much
love and devotion for her dogs over the years, the
family is requesting donations be sent to the Pacific
Animal Welfare Society of Coronado (PAWS), P. O. Box
180956, Coronado, CA 92178 in her name.
