My son-in-law's 3rd great grandfather is George Washington Carter b. ca.
1802 in SC. By 1820 he was in Putnam County, GA where he remained until
about 1862 when he lived in Tallapoosa County, AL. He married Mehaney Wincy
Waller on 27 Jan 1820 in Putnam County, GA. I've not been able to confirm
his parents, but suspect that they tie into Thomas and Elizabeth (Farris)
Carter of Goochland, VA and subsequently Wilkes/Elbert County, GA (where
Thomas died in 1811). Is this the same family that you're researching,
Greg? Or, does anyone else have this Carter family?

Greetings, Carter folk.
Let me start by thanking Jim, CCC, and Holly for their responses to my
query
about SC Carters.
Jim said:
"I am interested to hear of other Carters from South Carolina in that time
frame."
Jim, I did a census survey for the Barnwell Carters back to the 1810 census
(that's when Henry Carter was born), but I haven't gone back any further
than that. And I didn't look in any county/district other than Barnwell.
In 1810, there 5 Carter families, headed by George, William (the William
Sr.
I mentioned originally), Jesse (presumably William's father), Wiley, and
Jacob. By 1820, four Carter families remained, headed by George, Isom
(listed in later censuses as Isham), Alexander, and William. By 1830, six
Carter families (adding Elijah and John, who were listed together on the
same line. By 1830, George had apparently died, leaving his probable wife
Christine as the head of the household.
Jim also said:
"I am also curious where you were able to find marriage records of these
Carters."
The marriage of William to Margaret "Peggy" Copeland was found in several
family trees on Ancestry, most only referencing "Ancestry Family Trees" and
hence only good as clues. However, the 1850 census does list William (as
Wm. Snr, age 66) with a wife named Peggy, age 55. As to the marriage of
Henry Carter to Elizabeth Hiers, that was in a book titles
The_Hiers_Genealogy by the Hiers Research Committee in 1978:
Hiers Research Committee,
The_Hiers_Genealogy_(Heyer,_Hyer,_Hier,_Hire,_Hires,_
Hiers)_and_allied_famil
ies_Platts,_Rentz,_Fender,_Varn,_Carter,_Parker,_Croft,_Kinard,_others
(Columbia, South Carolina: R. L. Bryan, 1978). p. 294.
Holly asked:
"I have an Ephraim Carter back to 1800 in Kent County, DE. Do you see any
connection in your NJ records?"
Holly, I think you're mistaken. The Carters in question are from South
Carolina, not New Jersey. And so far, nothing on an Ephraim Carter there
in
Barnwell County.
Again, thanks for your reponses, and I hope to hear from others.
Peace,
Greg Lovelace
