Have you tried the 1870 and 1880 Census (I know Carter is a common name so it is hard to
find the
right family)? They are available on-line at
Ancestry.com and Heritage Quest (if you or
your
library has a subscription), and at
www.familysearch.org . The indexes differ so if one
doesn't
help it is still worth trying the others. Georgia death records are on-line, both from
the state
of Georgia and FamilySearch. There are a few years missing and if you are unlucky he
could fall
into the gap.
If you can get a starting point there are probably estate records for his father.

>Unfortunately, since I have absolutely no other names of Carters
in my
line, I wouldn't know where to look. He was a prominent and wealthy man
of his time, so it's incredible to me that he left no better paper
trail. Sigh. But thanks for anything you may be able to find.
Katherine
Bentley Frederick Carter, born probably around 1870, allegedly in
Jesup, GA
and died in Dec. 1931, probably in Atlanta? He was my grandfather, and is
my genealogical brick wall.
