Hello Lister's,
I am new to this list, I joined it in hope of possibly finding out more information great
great grandfather, Alexander Carter. The various documents that I have found on him start
with the 1850 census. It appears that he spent his entire life in Hudson New York.
What I have on him:
The 1850 census has him at 26 as a boarder in Hudson 1st ward. It lists him as
'Boatman'. On the 1860 census he is still in Hudson (2nd ward) and listed as 34
and born in NY ands a 'Boatman'. He is married to a Mary J. They have the
following children: Teresa 9, Caroline 7, William H 4 and Elizabeth A 2. His wife is also
listed as 34 and born in NY. On the 1870 census the family is in Hudson 1st ward, they
have added children Arthur listed as 9 and Blanche listed as 7. Alexander is listed as a
Policeman. The 1880 census has Alexander, listed as a constable, Mary, Elizabeth, Arthur
and blanch t home. They are in the 4th ward of Hudson. It skips to the 1900 census and
Alexander is now at the Fireman and Friends Home in Hudson. He is listed there in 1900 and
1910. He died there on July 29, 1912. I was able to get some information from the Home.
They have him admitted on April 3, 1899. He was listed as 73 and a widower. He was also
listed as a 'Sailing
Ship Captain'. He had been a member of Lafayette Engine Company #7 (Volunteers). His
children, at the time, were listed as: Wm. H. Carter, a son, in Whitehall NY, Carrie Shara
(not sure of spelling as it is written in longhand), of Amsterdam, NY, Elizabeth Carter,
of Amsterdam, NY. Catherine Sherwood of "Derby, Conn" (sp?), Blanche Carter of
Hudson, NY and Arthur Carter, a son, in Hudson, NY. Alexsander was buried in Hudson
Cemetery.
What is suspected but has not been proven yet.
High suspect that Alexander was married to a Catherine Elizabeth Decker. They married on
November 12, 1846. Catherine died February 20, 1848. The cause of death is listed as
'child bed'.
Alexanders second wife, Mary, is listed on some censuses as Mary A and Mary J. Family
stories has her as Mary J St John but no proof on that.
It looks like Alexanders parents might have been Alanson Carter and his wife Sophia ???.
There appear on many censuses living close to each othre. There is also another Carter
family living close to them. Might be that all the Carters were related?
Would love to find out more on the family. Would love to find if Alason is the father for
sure or not. I am at a brickwall with this line. Also who was Mary (A/J)??
Any ideas or information, or even connections out there?
Thanks
Bob
