Hi Dick,
Well, a project I did with my school classes was to have them make a
pedigree chart with a trait (or two) and see how far you can follow it
back... Unfortunately, we can only trace some of these things back so
far. You have 3 generations of your lazy eye trait. Can you go back
farther than that with that trait? Your father's father or further back?
Any mention of some vision problems on the census records for your
relatives?
This is sort of what I was thinking with the blindness trait in the
Carters. Oft times some census records did make note of blindness in their
records. Other records might be in family stories or other histories.
Perhaps one family might have inherited the family stories or histories.
IMHO, only when we can connect with the whole family, can we see the whole
picture.
Hope that helps!
PS - squares for men, circles for women - some creative visual for the
trait (an eye with the pupil out of alignment?) in the box or circle.
Sounds like a science project to me!

Hi Lynn,
Sorry! I assume too much...
Samuel Carter appeared in Nelson county, KY about 1799ish (Land grant date)
... He died in 1810. I assume he was born about 1745. He came to KY from
NC but maybe VA or NJ before that?? (For instance, I find the names
Carter, Brown and Beckwith in Loudoun Co,, VA in late 1700s.. Beckwith
married into my Brown line.. Some think that Samuel's wife, Susannah was
Susannah Pipes but I have no evidence of that... But Pipes were in NJ, VA,
NC..)
Here are some notes in my file from Ty Goodart about Nancy and
Shadrick/Shadrach
1. Barnabas & Rebecca Carter had three children (Barnabas, Shardrick &
Elizabeth).
Shadrick (b. in Nelson Co., KY), who married in Edwards Co., IL, Nancy
Carter (b. abt 12-4-1824 in Hardin Co., KY) daughter of Joseph Carter &
Charity Huston Carter. It appears that Joseph was the son of Samuel &
Susannah Carter of Hardin Co., KY. Shadrick & Nancy had several daughters
all married, but their 3 sons made it to adulthood - *but none married and
1 or 2 were blind.*
2. I know Rebecca married Barnabas Carter (the Rev War Vet) in 1813 and
after Barnabas' death, in Nelson Co., KY, Rebecca went and lived with her
son Shadrick Carter in Edwards/Wabach Co., IL. Rebecca and Barnabas's had
three children -- Barnabas, Jr.(married 1st Elizabeth Byrd & 2nd Margaret
Amanda Vanvactor--both in Bullit Co., KY); *Shadrick ( married Nancy Jane
Carter - in Edwards Co., IL) *& Elizabeth (married Joseph or Joel, or Job
Bray - in Nelson Co., KY).
Rebecca Davis Carter's pension appl. (as Barnabas' widow) was also signed
by Shadrick Carter & Martin Davis -- both of Wabash Co., IL. Martin Davis
was the son of William Davis (b. abt 1800 in KY). Martin was married 1st
to Phebe Carter (sister of Nancy Jane Carter) and as such Martin Davis was
the brother-in-law of Shadrick Carter.
Nancy Jane & Phebe Carter were the daughters of Joseph Carter & Charity
Huston of Hardin Co., KY. [mkf - Joseph is a son of Samuel and Susannah
Carter]
Hope that helps!
