Calvin Carter, now deceased, who ran Carter's Store in Leesville was
one
of those who located graves that were identifiable, and moved them. A long
conversation with Waddy Salmon indicated that Williamson Burnette was
buried
where the DAR monument is. I remember when he had the
dedication/celebration
of it finally being installed. Calvin showed me where some grave stones
were
moved to- as well as a second place - a cemetery with a missing church in
2000 or so. Most were to the north and slightly west of Leesville. That
said, there were more than were lost- mainly due to lack of markings or
knowledge of who was in them- since they were long gone markers, or marked
only with a rock. I'm not sure but I'd think perhaps the Jones Library
may
have some of the records, if the Bedford museum doesn't. I'm not sure what
has happened with the Carter store and home. He had one of the Moon
Bible's
but one that didn't have the answers I was looking for, but did have a lot
Adams and related family information. He had loaned another to a person
doing some research and she never returned it, so I have no idea where
that
went either. Calvin had long been on a mission to preserve what was left
of
Leesville. Sadly we can't ask him. He was a commissioner for Campbell
County
and had ties to Avoca, so perhaps Avoca might have the information. Last I
looked, much of Waddy's information was online. His niece (?) or daughter
contacted me after his death but that was a good while ago- maybe 10 years
or more.
