Dear John,
I would appreciate it if you would keep my line in mind also. I am not typing here with my
notes so I don't have exact dates for you.
My line is a Nancy Carter, maiden name unknown but might have been Herring... who was
listed as a widow in Mississippi. She had a son named Daniel and several daughters. My
line is through Martha Carter, her daughter, who married James Herring. The Herrings were
in Montgomery County, Mississippi and moved in the 1850-60 frame to Yell County, Arkansas
and lived in the Duchess Creek area of Danville there. In 1860, Martha was age 25. She and
Mr. Herring had two children: Celestial who was 5 and Cole Martin Herring who was born in
1860 by the time the census was taken. I have never found a record to identify Nancy or
who her husband might have been.
Thanks for any help you might have to offer,
Polly
James Herring served in the Civil War and when he returned, he remarried and moved to
Texas. I found no further record of Martha Carter Herring or of Celestial. Cole apparently
stayed in the Pope/Yell County areas of Arkansas and worked on farms until he was old
enough to marry.

Most of the Carter's I am researching left Geogia before 1850 and headed to MS and
LA. I do have some Carters that stayed but I have not researched that line yet. I will
keep that name in mind in case I come across it later.

Hi, I continue to look (without success, thus far) for my Carter grandfather, Bentley
Frederick Carter, who is said to have been born in Jesup, GA around 1870ish. (Any
reference to Georgia Carters makes me perk up my ears!) The 1930 census lists both his
parents as having been born in Georgia as well, but I haven't a clue as to their
names. Nor have I found any verification of his birth place or date. He is said to have
had at least one brother, and he married (for the second time) in 1919 my grandmother,
Alma Irene Mulligan, b. 1895 in Lenoir City, TN. Since you did mention Georgia, I'm
grasping at your straw, in hopes that the somewhat unusual name of Bentley might ring a
bell.

I'm researching the line of two brothers; William Taylor Carter
(b. 1805; d.1891) and John R. Carter b.1808;
d.1869) in Ashley Co., Arkansas. They came through Wilkes county,
Georgia in the early 1800's and both brothers married sisters in the Fuqua family.
Their father was John (Jack) A. Carter
(b.1784; d. 1860) and mother I believe was Theodocia Dunaway. Jack Carter moved on to
Texas and then back to Mississippi where he died in 1860 in Pontotoc Co.
John (Jack) Carter's parents were Francis Scott Carter (b.1759? Rockingham Va,; d.
1783 Baldwin, Ga) and Margaret Taylor (b. abt 1768 Rockingham, Va; d.?)
From
there back I am finding conflicting information on Francis Scott
Carter's parents. I found some information that indicates his father
could have been John Carter (b. 1737 Henrico, Va.) and married a Rebecca Stuart in 1754,
Brunswick Co,
Va.
Then I have some information that his father was a Robin Carter and had a brother William
who married Elizabeth Grimes and another UNKNOWN brother who possibly had a son James
Carter.
But I do not have enough info to be positive on either of these findings.
Does anyone have any information on any of these individuals?
Thanks
John Carter
